No kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, canoes, or other non-motorized watercraft will be allowed in the no-wake/escort zone. Thunder on the River: Lucas Oil drag boat racing series returns to Havasu

Boats traveling at 260 mph hit Havasu Friday

Dollar, the racing series director for Lucas Oil, said boats traveling at 260 mph are a sight to see.

The return of the races is expected to draw thousands to Rotary Park for the three-day event, which kicks off Friday morning. The park will be closed for this event from Friday morning to Sunday evening but morning walkers and runners will be allowed to use the trail before the event starts.

The event is said to bring some of the best professional drag boat race teams in the country to the lake to battle.

The water elevation of the lake and temperatures provide for some of the fastest runs ever, especially in the Top Fuel Hydro category where speeds surpass the 260 mile per hour mark in about 3.3 seconds on a 1,000-foot race course, according to the Convention and Visitors Bureau website.

Dollar said the only major difference from last year’s event is one full round of qualifying will take place on Friday afternoon, and two other qualifying rounds will follow on Saturday.

There will be a marked course that boaters have to go around. There will be no anchoring in this area.

The safety zone will be set up with patrol boats and boats without a mooring pass will not be allowed near Thompson Bay and will be kept behind Copper Canyon. There will be escort boats to assist people in getting across that area.

A CVB official said the event is still in need of volunteer patrol boats to outline the perimeter so recreational boaters don’t go in the course. Volunteers will need to sit anchored from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will be compensated $50 for the day.

“We know it’s going to be an inconvenience for some folks in the community but fortunately it’s only for a few days and it’s a great event,” said City Manager Charlie Cassens. “It draws thousands of folks.”

Show times

• Gates open at 7 a.m., Friday through Sunday. The show and shine event will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at Rotary Park. All other events will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday through Sunday.

Admission and closures

• The spectator area will be located in Rotary Park. The general admission for Friday is $10 and $20 on Saturday and Sunday. A weekend pass is $40. Teens will receive a $5 discount and pre-teens are free with an adult. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or at CarQuest and Big O Tire.

• Rotary Park will be closed to traffic at 6 a.m. on Friday and reopen Sunday night after the event is over.

• London Bridge Beach will also be closed with the exception of the dog park.

• There will be a no-wake zone from south of Grass Island to The Islander/California side of the lake.

• General parking is free and shuttle service will be available. Parking to the event is at Park Avenue and Highway 95, near the Lake Havasu City Aquatic Center. Entrance to the event will be the south entrance of Rotary Park. There is also available off-site parking free of charge just outside Rotary Park on city streets and empty lots. There will be no parking allowed in Rotary Park except handicap and RV's that pay for a spot.

Lucas Oil Drag Boat Races Underway at Lake Havasu

Posted: Saturday, October 11, 2014 12:01 am | Updated: 3:01 pm, Tue Oct 14, 2014.

By KEVIN BAIRD TODAY'S NEWS-HERALD

When the drag boats come roaring out of the Channel and into Thompson Bay, you can feel the hum of the engines in your chest. You can cheer but you won’t hear anything but roaring engines.

Spectators milled about Rotary Park Friday afternoon, drinking beers and eating fried foods like elephant ears as they watched the high-octane spectacle.

Steve Fenwick, a fan of drag boat racing has attended all of Lake Havasu City’s drag boat races, and he’s most excited for the top fuel boats that will run Saturday and Sunday.

“When the top fuel boats run, it feels like somebody’s pounding on your chest…,” he said. “I still get a rush seeing the top fuel boats.”

With a Keystone Light in his hand, Fenwick sat under a gazebo that had a view with the races as he discussed the races with family and friends on Friday.

Although they all loved the drag boat races nobody said they would try it, because it’s too dangerous.

“It used to be said—it was Eddy Hill who said it, ‘It’s not whether drag boat racing will kill you but when it will kill you,’” said Bill Toon Sr.

Fenwick said he’s heard of drag boat racers transitioning to street drag racing, because it’s safer.

Toon Sr. said people need diversions in life. Going to drag boat races is a diversion for him, and so is the Phantom of the Opera.

“The school bond is too much money,” Toon Sr. said with a chuckle. “But the races are (expletive denoting awesomeness)!”

Everyone under the gazebo agreed that Lake Havasu was the best drag boat racing Venue.

“A lot of the locations are manmade. This is a beautiful location,” Fenwick said. “In Phoenix, it’s like they have a quarter-mile swimming pool.”

Bill Toon Jr., who first attended a drag boat race with his father, in San Diego, back in 1982 summed up the drag boat racing experience for the party under the gazebo.

“This event is all about family and friends enjoying the race in a beautiful setting. I’d like to see this race come back to Havasu.” Toon Jr. said.

As the late afternoon wore on many spectators left, but the Toons and Fenwicks stayed—breaking out chips and guacamole.

Camera must have been well mounted, cool view. I wonder how deep the water is there close to shore?

I've been 143 in a blown picklefork drag boat. I cannot imagine going well over 100 mph faster. I also did not think it would ever happen. Is 300 in the future?
