A man who was killed when his boat exploded at a Port Washington marina Wednesday was the former mayor of a small Long Island village and a retired NYPD captain, officials said.

Bob Hogan, 74, who died in the fire at the Manhasset Bay Marina, was the mayor of Plandome Manor in the mid-90s and also served as a trustee of the small bayside village in Nassau County, the town's current mayor said in a statement.

Hogan and one other man were gassing up his 33-foot boat at 2:48 p.m. when the vessel exploded, hurling him into the water and killing him, Newsday reported.

The man who was with him dove into the water and survived, while two others on the dock helping Hogan fuel up also escaped uninjured, authorities said.

After the explosion, the flaming boat floated to a nearby dock, damaging other boats moored there, authorities and witnesses said.

A quick-thinking dockworker hopped into a second boat and towed the burning craft into the bay, where it became engulfed in flames.

The heroic worker, who wasn't identified, suffered burns to his arms and face and was taken to a hospital, where he was in stable condition on Wednesday night, Newsday reported.

It wasn't yet known what caused the explosion.

Nassau county homicide detectives and an arson squad were investigating the case, authorities said.

A Nassau police spokesman told the Daily News no one was available to comment on the incident on Wednesday morning.

According to Newsday, Hogan was a retired NYPD captain who also served as an assistant traffic commissioner in the city's transportation department.

He was also a longtime member of the NYPD Emerald Society Pipes and Drums and for years was a fixture in the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade in Manhattan.

"He was a Renaissance man," NYPD Det. Sgt. Coughlan told Newsday. "It's a terrible loss not just to the band but for the guys who will never have the opportunity to know him."
