Atlantic City Offshore Grand Prix Weekend
Media Title
June 20-22, Golden Nugget and on ocean just off the Boardwalk

Atlantic City Offshore Grand Prix

Now going on it's 17th year, The Atlantic City Offshore Grand Prix will be the main event of a packed race weekend on June 20-22. Race Chairman Dave Patnaude has joined forces with the New Jersey Performance Powerboat Club, Ed “Smitty” Smith, the president of the Offshore Powerboat Association, and Tom Pohlman, the executive vice president of and general manager of the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino to present the weekend of events.

40+ Offshore race boats will race up and down the beaches of Atlantic City putting on a thrilling show for all beach goers, beach bars and casino hotels. The racecourse is a small 4 mile oval as close to the beach as possible. Since the beach drops off quickly, the boats usually run within 150 feet of the surf. Even the outside leg can be clearly seen from the shoreline.

Patnaude is also including a special event for the Wounded Warriors Project as he has invited 80 Wound Warrior families to come to town and enjoy powerboat rides and a party.

The weekend will also include an exotic car show on Saturday and a chance for fans to see the boats close up as they arrive for the event on Friday and while they are in the dry pits at the marina on Saturday and before the race on Sunday.

The Grand Prix takes place on Sunday, with two sets of races: 12pm for the boats that can go up to 85mph and the extreme division that features boats that will go up to 150mph. The four-mile course will be on the open ocean opposite the Boardwalk with the raceboats starting from Revel and going down to the Atlantic Club casino and back around. Viewing sites will be available at the Steel Pier and the Pier Shoppes at Caesars, along the beach and a boater’s row just outside the race area that will be set up so you can have a boat’s eye view of the races.

As the event draws closer, participating casinos will be announcing their individual special events that tie in with the race weekend.

Safety precautions in place for Offshore Grand Prix

When the boats hit the race course at speeds over 100 mph for the Atlantic City Offshore Grand Prix on Sunday, June 22, a well-oiled rescue system will be in place.

"It’s very safe, and if anything goes wrong, help is immediately available," said Angelo Juliano, director of water operations for the New Jersey Offshore Powerboat Racing Association, the club hosting the event.

In the event of a crash or capsize, help is just seconds away, with medics and divers trained in rescue aboard helicopters and safety boats along the course, Juliano said. Boats with encapsulated cockpits carry oxygen supplies so that in the event of a capsize, crew members can survive until help arrives.

All the boats have escape hatches at the feet of crew members — drivers and throttlemen — so if upside down they can be unlatched. All crew members have to pass a dunk test, in which they swim out of a capsized boat, and a breathalyzer test the morning of the race.

Sweep boats will keep the course clear of debris and private boats, which are welcome as long as they stay outside the course, Juliano said. The course is a 4½ mile oval, with racing within view of spectators on the beach. See atlanticcityoffshoregrandprix, com for special viewing sites.

Staging area is at the Golden Nugget, where visitors can see the boats up close on land.

The weekend events kick off Friday, June 20, with a "poker run" for members of the New Jersey Performance Powerboat Club, going from Toms River to the Golden Nugget. On Saturday volunteer skippers of the NJPPC will give rides to service members as part of the Wounded Warrior Project (Call 848-210-6253 to volunteer.).

Also on Saturday there will be an exotic car show at the Golden Nugget 1 to 4 p.m.

More than 50 boats are expected to race, with competition beginning at noon Sunday and an awards ceremony at 6 p.m.
