View Full Version : Any Black Thunders for sale?

Looking for a Black Thunder I can make my own. Subsequently, warn interior, faded paint, engines need to be rebuilt all good things. No water issues though. You know "barn finds". Step bottom only. Thanks in advance....hopefully. Andy

I know of a 97 but it's not a step bottom. Cheapest step out there right now is 80000 I think.

abmotorman
03-04-2014, 04:22 PM
Yeah 80k is out of my range. Especially when you factor paint, interior and rebuilds. I'm sure that one is clean and the trailer is great but a little pricey still. If I wasn't looking for a fixer upper I would be all over the 2006 in Florida for 99k. Has better engines too.

Are you positive it has to be stepped? If the 97 is still available, it is one heck of a deal!!!

Turbinator just got diesels fundi. Nothing wrong with leaving your sticks on the dash for hours on end and not worrying about when the motor will pop. The BTs forbsale now have all been listed for at LEAST a year and there's a reason 14-17 year old boats aren't moving for 80+k and prob why the owners that have the nice ones are holding onto them and not listing. Heck, the 01 American flag 43 tall deck was last listed for 100k with low hour trip 575sci before it finally sold.

Look at the 42 fountains and 42 sonics. Prices are dropping like a rock. BT are just taking longer. Funding the fuel bill has to be some of the reasons. Doesn't look like that's going to get any better soon.

AB - there is a 43 flat deck at loto with 650s If I remember that a year or two ago the guy offered to me. 60-70k??? I thought it was named speed racer or speed something. Sax would know. The boat was never advertised.

abmotorman
03-08-2014, 11:26 PM
What is the difference between Flat Deck, XT and SC? The only one I've seen is a SC.

Ratickle
03-09-2014, 12:32 AM
The flat deck, GT I believe, is exactly that. No raised deck so the headroom in the cabin is about 5'10" instead of 6' 10". Coolermans is a flatdeck.

The EC stands for extended cockpit. The cockpit is longer because they were only available with twins, no triple engines, so the engine room is shorter. Most have the second row of bolsters in the cockpit.

The SC, Sport Cruiser, is the original raised deck design and most common.

abmotorman
03-09-2014, 12:44 AM
Coolermans is one bad ass boat. Looks like 2000 or newer. Might have to look this sax up soon. I'd be open to a flat deck for the right price.

Yeah, he'll be lucky to get $35K for that in today's market. Keep paying storage fee's bud. That will never sell at that price. The guy with the air brush should have been shot also. When I see that "broker" I normally think....:sifone:

I know the boat, nice overall used boat. engines and drives are not original and don't look to impressive. Obviously its not worth the asking price but the boat has always been indoors and very well maintained by its first 2 owners. Owner 3 bought it from the bank as a repo and owner 4 bought it for about 45grand but it came with one good 500HP and one really bad 500HP, plus blown drives.

Bulldog 455's???? are these Pontiac or Olds Motors?

That makes no sense to me either. The Bulldog was a 540 cu in 470 propshaft HP Merc. Great motor, that's what our BT came with originally. Awesome platform to build up from. May be one of the best Merc has ever developed. They were originally designed by Merc for the Aronow military cats to military specs from what I've been told. They were a 540 cu in tall deck GM 10.2" deck with 4.44 bore and 4.375 stroke. It was a siamesed block that could go out to 4.560 with no issues. They came with a Lunati crank, Manley rods, Weisco pistons and a Dart intake. A great motor they should still offer.....

Marc's was the very first BT we ever saw. It was on the seawall in Grand Haven and we had to take a look at it. After that we knew it was number one on our list of boats to have. For the price, I wouldn't worry too much about drives. The later modified Bravo's have been holding up really well behind bigger horsepower on larger boats. But, if you're gonna drag race out of the hole, or do big air wake jumps, forget it......

Congrats on the boat. I remember looking at it in 2008 at the factory. I really wanted trips but couldn't put the deal together. Any reason for the transom to be bad? Was it left in the water or intrusion??

JohnBT
08-23-2014, 11:22 AM
We think is was intrusion, the boat never sat in the water. When we had it running we saw reversion where the mufflers slid over the tailpipes. It was spraying the transom above the transom assembly, also when they drilled the holes for the airlines to the mufflers the holes weren't sealed off. Should know more when as it comes apart.

Hasn't been used in 2 years. Sits on lift in the Daytona Beach sun. Starboard engine overheats. They replaced raw water pump, still over heats. Engines never had head rebuilds. No trailer. Just curious. Any know where a trailer maybe?

Seems like exactly what you're looking for.....

New trailer isn't all that expensive if that's all that is holding you back.

abmotorman

You are correct, the trailer is the least of my concerns. The seller is some guy who starts it once in a while (doesn't instill confidence). The boat has been a salt boat for it's entire life. Looking at the picture of the transom??? The starboard engine and header have probably been overheated multiple times. Engine work especially don't scare me. My reality -The Active Thunder I currently own has just developed a 3" crack just above #1 cylinder on the port engine. Just pulled the engine tonight. To say i'm distracted is kinda understating it.

That sucks, I'd still think about an offer if that is what you want, but I know what you're going through. I don't know who else has looked at this thread yet but I haven't sent anyone else an email yet. Not sure there will be a better contestant out there any time soon.

Completely agree. Quiet already, trying to buy time... Any thoughts on good used trailers? My hunch is a new aluminum is probably the way I would go.

Was this the one? If so, it looks like a fountain now.

Fyi, this boat can be bought. It's not a salvage title situation either. I talked to the owner today. Very nice guy.

Hey Brett, that's cause you don't come see us enough lately. Seems like a pretty good deal unless all the wood is rotted. What do you know about it?

You know of any used BT trailers out there?

Although I'd personally call Manning Marine up here and see how busy they are. If they aren't swamped, he will make you a good deal on a new trailer. And they always fit BT's perfectly......

abmotorman, this is the BT we just bought. And yes it needs a transom. I'm going to get started derigging it real soon, would like to get it back home before the weather gets bad.

Just realized my first quote didn't work... Did you have the boat at loto for the shoot out? There was one that looked very similar to this running around but I also think there is another bt that has a similar paint job but with twins out there. Also the Horney toad boat was running around shoot out weekend, does anyone know where that one ended up??

No that wasn't us at the shoot out, just found out the boat is done. Going to head down Saturday morning and bring it home, now I can start putting it back together.

Any pix?

As of now it won't be going to XT, they are having some Quality Control issues lately. We are going to leave the interior alone for now.

The boat next to west marine is being repaired. I'm allowing the fiberglass guy (a friend of mine) to use my boat to make a mold that will be used for the repair.,my boat is inside his shop now. He will be finished making the mold and have my boat cleaned up by June 1. He will then launch me and do the repairs on the wrecked boat

Ratickle
05-21-2015, 11:29 PM

stevewy
05-22-2015, 09:19 AM
I don't know. I looked at it for sale 3 years ago prior to me buying the one I have. At that time, the owner wanted market price. Since then it was wrecked, now being repaired. I know the repair cost is very high. If it's still for sale, I doubt it will be cheap

Ratickle
05-23-2015, 08:44 AM
So now they want market price plus the cost of the repairs?

From: Steven David

"Best we got was 98 mph with 5 blade hydromotives. As I recall center prop was 32@ and outers were 30's with 1.36 gears.
He has changed engines, ours were just 500 efi' with Whipples added. Tommy at Chief built them. Dynoed at between 687 and 700 hp."

A very sad time for me, but "it is what it is". I am confronting some serious health challenges and have decided to consider selling my 2002 46EC Black Thunder. I love the boat more than any I have ever had. She is in fantastic shape and is all and more that I thought she would be when I purchased her. She features all of the standard BT items and everything works. In addition, a full winter cover, cockpit cover, full canvass with glass enclosure (like brand new), a bow thruster, awesome stereo system, Garmin GPS with G2 Great Lakes mapping, custom bedding, new carpet inside and in the cockpit, drive showers, and chrome skeg guards. The boat looks remarkable for being a 2002 literally almost no scratches on her. I am approaching 500 hours on 500 EFI.

It will be a great boat for anyone interested. I'm not "giving" her away, but will be reasonable on pricing. I paid $140K and have put another $20K into her within the last 3 years. If you are interested or know of someone interested let me know ............ but please, this is hard enough for me so serious contacts only. Thanks

Ratickle
08-20-2015, 08:49 AM
That's too bad. My wife is going through some very serious health issues too, and we haven't been on one of our boats together for the last three years.

If there is anything we can do to help with contacts in the health services field, let us know. We'll be glad to share any info we may have gathered going through this crap.

Start your own thread about the boat with pictures, stories, improvements. etc in the Black Thunder section and we'll help get the word out. Hopefully you'll get "repaired" and the need to sell will go away.
