Clearwater Beaches Packed and Perfect Weather for Super Boat Teams

DSC_6768Clearwater, Florida – (October 2, 2013) – Super Boat International showcased one of the best events of the season and Team Spirit of Qatar came out on top as the Turbine Class winner. Twenty-eight boats competed in the National Championship event and teams were greeted by four days of perfect weather, which came on the heels of one of the rainiest weeks in recent months. Driver, Sheikh Hassan Bin Jabor Al Thani, along with accomplished throttleman Steve Curtis, took top honors as the nearest competitor, Miss Geico, spun out early in the race.

As teams rolled into Clearwater on Friday (September 27) and prepared for the weekend’s event, John Carbonell, President of Super Boat International, along with co-promoters Frank Chivas and Brian Aungst, conveyed much success in the opening press conference. For the 5th year, the local organization was very pleased with Superboat and the impact it brings to the community. Chamber President Bob Clifford comments, “ this event will bring in over 15 million dollars to the community this week during our normally slowest part of the year. Super Boat has brought us a product that has put us on the map.” Since the National Event in Clearwater has been a proven success, Chivas continues to encourage Super Boat to allow them to host the World Championships, which are currently being held in Key West, FL.

Another team very pleased with the outcome was Team STIHL, who took a green to checkered first place finish. Owner, JR Noble overcame a points deficit to earn the National Championship Title. “We were behind in points due to some tough luck this year, but with persistence and a great team, we were able to take home the win. This place is great and it was an awesome race,” comments Nobel.

DSC_1697One of the most exciting races of the day was No. 05 Team Broadco in their 40’ MTI competing against Instigator Motorsports and their 40’ Fountain. Ultimately, Instigator succumbed to numerous lead changes between the two and Broadco came out on top. As both teams swapped positions on the straightaways and corners, it was apparent the Superboat Extreme Class was the event of the day to watch. Instigator took second place and Lucas Oil Silverhook took 3rd place.

At the end of the day, five National Champions and six Florida Champions were crowned. Teams that win the Florida races and earn more points than their counterparts, earn the title of Florida Champion. Teams that win the points battle of 7 races throughout the entire season earn the title of National Champion.

Other class winners were: Superboat Vee, Team Sunprint; Manufacturer P3, Black Pearl; Superboat Stock, Frank & Jimmies; and Manufacturer P4, Two Cruel. Teams crowned National Champions included Manufacturer P3, Team Kilt; Superboat Vee, Team Red Hot Racing / JD Byrider; Superboat Stock, Frank & Jimmies; Superboat, Team STIHL and Superboat Extreme, Lucas Oil Silverhook. In additional to the National Champions, Teams that successfully won all races in Florida and were appropriately crowned Florida Champions included, Manufacturer P4, Two Cruel; Manufacturer P3, 2nd Amendment; Superboat Vee, Sunprint; Superboat Stock, Frank & Jimmies; Superboat, Team STIHL and Superboat Extreme, Team Instigator.
