5th Annual Clearwater Bright House Super Boat National Championship Event Is Here

Clearwater, Fl. (September 20, 2013)

Super Boat International teams have raced all season and are now ready for the final race in the National Points race competition. Teams will compete Sunday, September 29, in the 5th Annual Clearwater Bright House Super Boat Championship event. This is the 7th race of the offshore race season and, with a very tight points race, the National Champion will be crowned Sunday afternoon.

“There has been some great racing all season and, when we come to Clearwater, everyone is ready to put on a great show,” comments Super Boat International President, John Carbonell. “Frank Chivas, Brian Aungst, and the entire Clearwater team along with their media partners really do a great job of promoting the race. The proof is seeing 5,000 spectator boats lining our course and fans all along the beaches. Getting good support is necessary so we can put on a great race and have a good showing for our fans. I know our teams are ready to race, so it will be a fun-filled exciting weekend,” comments Carbonell.

Fans can expect the biggest and fastest boats to take to the waters of Clearwater Beach. This season teams, STIHL, WHM, JD Byrider, Spirit of Qatar, and Red Hot Racing to name a few, have put on a great display of competition. We have seen lead changes back and forth from lap to lap in many classes and teams have been deck to deck all year. This year many of the racers have seen bumpy conditions from race to race, so it has been a true offshore season. Years past many of the racers saw flat conditions from race to race, but this year, it has changed. And, as for the upcoming World Championships in November, racing conditions in Key West are always unpredictable.

Lucas Oil / MAV TV, one of the fan favorites in the Super Boat Extreme class, should be pumped and ready to do battle for a National Title. The Extreme class has become very popular since the inclusion of boats of various horsepower, lengths and styles. They have been combined to run against each other with the only regulation… they cannot exceed 117 mph. If they breakout over this speed, they are penalized. This has allowed Super Boat to reduce the number of classes, while at the same time, improving the competitiveness of the teams in various classes.

With the broadcast area so close to the pits and the racecourse, we are encouraging racers to be a guest on the livestream show when they are not racing. We have had many racers as guests on the show and they always add an interesting twist to the livestream. Maybe you are our number one Super Boat fan and want to be on the show… give us call and we’ll see what we can do. If you can’t make the race, tune in online and see what is in store for the spectacular event coming up in Clearwater.

This year, our Sunday races will be streamed on https://new.livestream.com/sbi/clearwater2013 so you won’t miss any of the action, if you can’t make it to the beaches. Or if you’re on the beach, you can watch and listen to it on your smartphone. On the Livestream page, listen to the race, see the interviews, chat live and watch all the action as it happens. Fans can stay connected with us at superboat.com and Like Us on Facebook for all this year’s news. The Super Boat schedule is posted through 2013 and 2014 with the next races coming up Clearwater and Key West, FL.

Super Boat International has seen increased viewership by fans, families, and other racers tuning in and watching the events live… on livestream. The 2013 season starts with the previous year’s World Championship in November 2012. Since last year’s Key West World Championship to date, the online coverage has seen significant increases in online viewing. With well over a million pageviews on Superboat.com, coverage has been seen in 181 countries around the globe. SBI is 14 countries short of having every country and “independent” country in THE WORLD visit Superboat.com.

Teams will start to arrive on Thursday, September 26, in Coachman Park on Drew Street and set up their displays, boats and equipment. Fans will have the opportunity to see their favorite teams up-close. There are no special credentials needed for admittance to Baystar Race Village. Fans have full access to the pit area and are encouraged to get autographs from their favorite drivers and throttlemen. Friday, September 28, race village opens at 10:00 a.m. Later in the afternoon, fans will be treated to the “Blast Friday” boat parade and block party on Cleveland Street from 5:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Saturday, teams will start testing at 12:00 and will have to be craned out of the water by 5:00 p.m. Fans can enjoy food and drink all day … and from 7:30 p.m. until 10:30 p.m., they can enjoy the live entertainment in Baystar Race Village. Sunday, September 30, races are scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. with the awards ceremony scheduled for 4:30 p.m. in race village… everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.

CLEARWATER

Feel the need for speed? Head out to Clearwater Beach this weekend for the chance to watch some of the fastest and largest powerboats in the world at the 5th Annual Clearwater Super Boat National Championship and Seafood Festival.

High-performance boats will be going full throttle, roaring across the Gulf of Mexico parallel to Clearwater Beach at speeds of up to 180 mph.

Beachgoers can relax and watch the race any way they want. Choose a spot to watch from shore. Launch a boat to watch at sea. Rent a room and watch from your hotel balcony. Or buy a ticket to see the race from Pier 60.

Not able to go? The action will be streamed at new.livestream.com/sbi/clearwater2013.

"I watch from the 17th floor, the deck of the Hyatt," said former Clearwater Mayor Brian Aungst Sr., a co-founder of the race. "It's fun to watch the boats start lining up at 8 a.m. to see the race. Those boats don't just have one or two people on them. According to the Coast Guard, we had 5,500 boats in the water to watch the race last year."

But the fun begins long before the racing boats enter the water. Baystar Race Village at Coachman Park on the downtown waterfront will again be the dry pit area for the three-day festival.

On Friday, people can see the boats on dry land, up close and personal.

Race teams will sign autographs and pose for pictures.

For fans, the party continues later at the city's Blast Friday downtown, with a boat parade and concert featuring the music of John Cafferty of Beaver Brown Band with Stormbringer.

On Saturday, boats and teams will remain in the pits at Coachman Park for spectators to see and meet the drivers, but super boat practice runs also will take place. Stay for the evening and watch fireworks explode over Clearwater Beach.

On Sunday, the racing starts on Clearwater Beach. The entire beach will turn into a party as tourists and locals alike watch in awe.

The Clearwater Downtown Development Board voted in July to give a $10,000 grant to the Clearwater Super Boat Championship Festival this year, in part because the event has been successful in creating a connection between Coachman Park and the Cleveland Street District, and because the media coverage brings attention to the Clearwater Beach area.

And that attention is working, judging from the growth in the crowds.

"Historically, the race weekend was the slowest tourist weekend of the year ... that's all changed," Aungst said. "Last year, because of the race, there were 6,200 room nights and a $15 million economic impact for the three days.

"The festival has really grown," continued Aungst, who credits his co-founder, restaurateur Frank Chivas. "The first couple of years there was a really big crowd on Sunday. Last year there was a spring break crowd on Clearwater Beach on Friday and Saturday. That tells me we're putting the heads in beds."

The Sunday races start at Pier 60 and run on a 2.5-mile course. Laps loop back to where the race began. Two-person race teams juggle working the throttle and steering while the boats speed across the water.

Since the inaugural race in 2009, the event has grown into a festival with the addition of the boat parade and concert.

"Every year it gets a little bigger with events we've added," said Aungst. "The kids and adults enjoy seeing the boats up close and meeting the drivers. We've expanded to make it a more robust, family-friendly experience."

Proceeds from the festival will support Tampa Bay Charities, Inc., which includes the Community Clearwater Sailing Center, the Make a Difference Fishing Tournament and Sailability.
