First flight, and in an RV

Frankie, our 11th grade son, is taking flight training at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. This
weekend his class had a chance to put what they have been learning into practice. Today was "First
Flight Day"! They majority of them were in high performance, acrobatic aircraft know as "RVs".
After the flight the ERAU professor took us to her personal hanger and showed a fabric aircraft.
The day was concluded by an unexpected invitation to tour the tower. A big THANK YOU to
ERAU, CAI (Charlotte Aerospace Institute), EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association), PGD (Punta
Gorda Airport), Prof Candiani, and our pilots and aircraft owners. Check out the photos!

After the students returned, and all had flights, the ERAU professor called over to the
tower. She introduced herself, said it was her class that had tied up the taxiways and
runways with this group of RVs, and asked if the students could be given a tour of the
tower. The response was "we are hear for you, call us when your group is at the tower
area gates". This was my first trip into a 'commercial' tower. We were given brief
instructions, went up the elevator, up the final set of stairs, and into the darkened tower
control room. They controllers went around the room, describing each position and the
responsibilities. Then they open up a Q&A session for our students. After something
like 25 minutes, the access hatch, a small steel door was opened, and we were allowed to
go outside and around the catwalk that surrounds the tower, and is just below the control
room windows. The last 7 pictures I posted, were taken for way up here.

I had seen that aircraft for sale quite some time ago. Interesting history. Priced to sell, but way to costly to maintain and fly. IMO: the best x military jet to own is the Aero L-39. A good really one is about $200,000-$300,000, but expensive to maintain and fly. Either way, our children know better.


Policy for my children, living in my home:
You should expect to receive food, shelter, cloths, education, necessities of life and love
You should expect honesty and integrity from us
We expect honesty and integrity from you
Respect your parents
Respect your teachers
Respect adults
No alcohol
No drugs
No sex outside of marriage
Do your best and strive for excellence in all things
You take responsibility and consequences for your words
You take responsibility and consequences for your actions
You want a car, boat, bike, plane, whatever........get a job

That is very, very close to my policy for my daughter.

It started when she was 5. The list was:
Reading.
Respect.
Responsibility.

It pretty much grew to match your list by the time she was older and living at home.
But she was so responsible, that she earned the "get to live in one of Dad's houses at a reduced cost" plan. :)
So I am helping her out at this point.
But only because she is mid-20s, trustworthy, and the most responsible person in her generation that I have ever met.
It's positive reinforcement. If it becomes enabling, it's over.

Generally speaking, if you give your children a solid foundation, and reasonable rules to protect them, generally they turn out so much better, for them, for us, for everyone.

We see so many children with no boundries, and parents who bail them out every time, they almost always wind up like train wrecks, and young adults.

We need more folks like your Dad, you and myself!

Helping out, even when they become adults, is part of being good parents.
