Super Boat Racing Back To The Big Apple

By SBI on August 30, 2013 in Blog, Prerace Release, Press Release

Teams to Compete in 23rd Annual New York Grand Prix – Tribute To 9-11

New York (August 30, 2013) – For 22 years, Super Boat International has traveled to New York and raced the Hudson and East Rivers for what has become an iconic event. This year is no different. On Sunday, September 8th, teams will compete in the 23rd Annual New York Grand Prix with the new Freedom Tower in the background and Statue of Liberty in the foreground. New York City and lower Manhattan is one of the most picturesque skylines in the world of boat racing.

Super Boat International was asked to return to New Jersey and Liberty State Park the year after the tragic events of the 9-11 terrorism attacks. Within days after the 2001 Super Boat race, the Twin Towers were attacked. Ten months after that horrific event, the Governor of New Jersey confirmed in a letter to Super Boat International that racing should continue there as it would help raise the level of community spirit closer to levels of normalcy.

The President of Super Boat International, John Carbonell has fond memories of the New York race and knows the teams racing today will cherish their memories in the future. “The events surrounding 9-11 were very tragic and, for us to be asked to return and race the following year, meant a lot to me and our organization. We have had some great races in the 20 plus years and it is important to me to put on the best possible show we can for the entire area. Years from now, many of today’s racers will reflect on this race and have fond memories of racing and seeing New York and The Statue of Liberty outside their raceboat windows,” comments Carbonell. This year the organizers of Liberty State Park have asked Super Boat to run the Sunday race at 11:00 am to accommodate the Tribute to 9-11 memorial service taking place at 1:00 pm.

This season has showcased some of the most exciting action in all of offshore racing. Most recently in Michigan City, Indiana, the Superboat class saw WHM and Team STIHL trading paint and fiberglass at 100 mph for the boating supremacy in the most competitive class. Team WHM Motorsports, owned and driven by Billy Mauff and throttled by Jay Muller, has taken a 183 points lead headed into this race. The winner of the Michigan City race, JD Byrider, is sitting in third place with a deficit of 457 points behind STIHL.

Another boat that has taken a commanding lead in the National points battle is the No. 10 Red Hot Racing 30’ Fountain in the Superboat Vee Class. They lead the field with 2955 points and nearly a thousand points over the nearest competitor, Phantom Racing. Earlier this year in Sarasota, Florida, Team Phantom experienced a dramatic spinout near the finish line as their boat hopped, spun and rolled and eventually stopped upright; not stopping until the canopy behind the driver’s seat was ripped off to the waterline. The Superboat rescue team, on the scene in seconds and receiving the all-good signal from the team, immediately threw a line to the sinking vessel. Team Phantom is making great efforts to repair their raceboat and return to action soon.

In the 2012 New York Grand Prix, Team Tilted Kilt took 1st place in the Manufacturers P3 class and hopes to do the same this year. Driven by Rich Davis and throttled by Tony Canale, the team is hoping for another victory on the Hudson River. The Tilted Kilt team sits 525 points out of first place in the P3 class behind points leader, Team Dare Devil.

His Excellency Sheikh Hassan with Team Qatar will be debuting his new Turbine powered 50’ Mystic offshore powerboat on Sunday, September 8th. The team has campaigned the No. 20 Spirit of Qatar Superboat most of the season and, now with his new entry, Team Qatar will race two boats. Hassan is expected to put on quite a show with this brand new state-of-the-art raceboat.

Teams will be arriving Friday, September 6th, in the dry pits (Liberty Landing Marina) to set up their equipment. This is where fans can get an up-close look at all the boats and have an opportunity to talk to their favorite teams. Teams and drivers always encourage the fans to come down and spend time in the pits, where they can swap racing (boating) stories.

This year, our Sunday race will be streamed on https://new.livestream.com/sbi/newyork2013 so you won’t miss any of the action, if you can’t make it to the river. Or if you’re on the New Jersey or New York riverside, you can watch and listen to it on your smartphone. On the Livestream page, listen to the race, see the interviews, chat live and watch all the action as it happens. Fans can stay connected with us at superboat.com and Like Us on Facebook for all this year’s news. The Super Boat schedule is posted through 2013 and 2014 with more races coming up this season in Clearwater and Key West, FL.

Qatar's Turbine Boat plans on making their debut in New York......

NEW YORK: Sheikh Hassan bin Jabor Al Thani and Steve Curtis will give their new turbine racer, Al Adaa’am 96, its eagerly awaited racing debut at this weekend’s 23rd Annual New York Super Boat Grand Prix, round seven of Super Boat International (SBI).

The president of the Qatar Marine Sports Federation (QMSF) and his British throttleman gave the stunning new turbine-engined Mystic boat a shakedown on Lake Stanford in Florida last week before the team headed north to prepare for this weekend’s race in New York.

“We tested on Lake Stanford to give the boat a shakedown after the minor fuel leak that stopped us racing in Sarasota,” said Sheikh Hassan.

“The test was not to look at miles per hour but to take a look at the new system we have on board. My first impression was ‘wow’, impressive, excellent acceleration. It handles well, but I still need to get used to it. It’s a bigger boat than the Class 1 I used to run, but I don’t think that should be an issue.

“I am looking forward to New York. We are not going to push. We want to make sure that everything is okay. We will go out there and have fun and test the boat on the racecourse. We are on a river and I guess there will be some strong currents, the ferries will be running up and down and that could create some issues on the water.”

Meanwhile, Qatar team regular Mohammed Al Nasser has Xcat racing commitments and Ali Al Neama will now be joined by the experienced Billy Moore in Spirit of Qatar 20. Moore, from Grantsborough in North Carolina, is an experienced throttleman and raced at the helm of Warpaint in the Superboat class this season.

This class has provided some nail biting racing throughout 2013 and Team WHM Motorsports arrives in New York with a 183-point lead over Team Stihl, with JD Byrider in third.

Sheikh Hassan also confirmed that Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah, Qatar’s leading rally driver and the current leader of the FIA Middle East Rally Championship, will test with the team in Qatar in October before joining the QMSF-backed operation at the Key West World Championships in November.

“His boat is now being worked on to be ready with big power,” enthused Sheikh Hassan.

After team registration and inspections on Friday, teams will be permitted to test on the course for the first time on Saturday with racing in the various Turbine, Superboat Extreme and Superboat classes taking place at the earlier time of 11am (6pm Doha time) on Sunday to fall in line with a tribute to the 911 tragedy that is taking place at 1pm.The Peninsula

Sheikh Hassan And Steve Curtis Cruise To Stunning Win In New York Super Boat Grand Prix

NEW YORK (USA): Sheikh Hassan bin Jabor Al-Thani and Steve Curtis gave their new turbine racer, Al Adaa’am 96, a stunning debut in Sunday’s 23rd Annual New York Super Boat Grand Prix, round seven of Super Boat International (SBI), on the Hudson River.

The powerful turbine-powered 50’ Mystic boat, which is also badged as Spirit of Qatar 96, was the class of the entire field and the Qatar Team duo cruised to a convincing overall victory.

Ali Al-Neama teamed up with throttleman Billy Moore for the first time in Spirit of Qatar 20 and reached the finish in second position in the Superboat class, which is developing into a fascinating contest between Team WHM Motorsports and Team Stihl. Team Stihl won the race on this occasion to set up a fascinating showdown at the final round of the series.

After testing was permitted on the Hudson on Saturday, teams lined up for the 23rd Annual New York Super Boat Grand Prix at 11.00hrs local time to avoid a clash with a 9/11 memorial scheduled for 1pm.

With the stunning backdrop of Manhattan Island, the field was split into two groups with the three Superboat entrants, an entry in Superboat Unlimited and Sheikh Hassan and Steve Curtis in Al Adaa’am 96 in group one. Four Superboat Extreme, one Vee and one Production 3 entry lined up for the second start on the four-mile course. Spirit of Qatar 20 lined up alongside Superboat category leader Team WHM Motorsports and rival Team Stihl.

Sheikh Hassan and Steve Curtis cruised into the lead down the first straight, as Team Stihl led the Superboat class from Spirit of Qatar 20 and Team WHM Motorsports.

Sheikh Hassan continued to pull away from the rest of the field as the 21-lap race progressed and Team Stihl maintained the advantage in the Superboat class from Spirit of Qatar 20, once Team WHM Motorsport withdrew with mechanical issues.

The next round of Superboat International (SBI) takes place at Clearwater Florida on September 27-29.
