1980 Excalibur Exicutioner 31 ?

Looking at this 31 Ex. 1980 with twin turbo Banks motors. Kevlar hull. Seller says 100 MPH but I doubt it. Need some work but cool old boat. Anybody families with it? Name on side says "Tuff Noogies"

Well, I keep digging into this one, and am getting more and more goofed up...


In 1981, the "Fountain and Garbrecht Executioner" won Powerboat Magazines "Offshore Boat of the Year" award. It seems that in 1980 and 1981, Fountain, Scarab, and Excalibur all sold boats made from the same 2 molds at the factory, (molds owned by Jean Claude Simon).

Is it a solid hull or more light weight with kevlar. I saw something about only corners were kevlar, not the whole hull

From what I've been told:

Kevlar hulls are stronger, and lighter. The biggest problem with the early ones was they were not vacuum bagged, so there was a problem of delamination if the wetting out process was not done properly. A bit different than the wetting out process in polyester glass. So, I've been told to review closely the areas arounf bulkheads and corners to see if any delam has started. If it has not, the hulls should be good to go. As for corners only vs. the entire hull, I would have no idea. The color of the glass should be different where there is Kevlar. A bit greener. Guys????

As for 100, I'm with Rob, a fairly good chance depending on those engines. They were a decent design, In 1981 the test boat with twin Merc 400's ran 74mph at 5100 RPM. The same hull in 1980, with 475HP Turbocharged engines, ran 89MPH. Coaxing another 11 shouldn't be all that tough with a few mods to the engines and because of the (?) #2's in the pics vs. TRS's in the test boats. As for the #2's. if that is what they are, parts I believe are impossible to find anymore.

Rust in the engine compartment photos would give me second thoughts also.
If there is only one Noogie, it used to be in Florida before moving to the west coast back in about 2001 or so?

It's a cool old boat but appears to need some work. Interior is shot. Doesn't look like it's been babied. I haven't seen it in person yet. It's not that far from me but don't know if I want to mess with it.

I'm looking at a super clean really cool 31 Sutphen too.

We have a couple Sutphen guru's on here. If you're serious, PM them or start another thread. I still am under the impression Sutphen may be the fastest non-stepped Vee in rough water that was ever built. (That lasts more than a race or two). The design was certainly impressive.

Yes, Sutphen is 26 degrees. The one I'm looking at is a very well known boat and I think it's really cool. This Ex looks like a lot of work and may not be for me.

Need to watch the fuel tanks on the early excaliburs. Known for cracking. Kevlar has a gold color. I remember something about Kevlar deteriorating over time, like 'drying out' so to speak.

That one pictured looks cool, but it'd have to be pretty close to free. Lots of potential, but for what you can get a clean good running 10 meter Fountain for, well, ya know....

I know a guy locally who totally restored a 31 Excalibur. Boat has the pad bottom, he converted to bravos during the restoration. With 450HP or so 454's, I believe it runs low 70's. Very cool old boat.

It's definitely a cool piece. Id bolt some TRS on and lose the Ssm ii setup. It would be neat to freshen the motors and keep the old turbo setup!!

TRS get a bad rap, but I had a single with a b/w and loved it.

Yep. Nothing wrong with a TRS. As long as they are set up properly, behind some 450-500hp motors in this boat, they'd work well and last a long time. Very smooth shifting around the dock.

I wanna say that a TRS is a little shorter than a ssm ii, so bolting a Trs in place will bring up the props haft height a bit. I don't think that boat will run anywhere near 100 though without 750hp a side.

Paul , example , and that is ...........Skater's built with Kevlar are using a host of other materials or fabric's in there build which most likely will be ...4 oz for there skin coat , combined with S or E glass, and Carbon fiber , which could change ...or be different depending on the customer, and ..........how light he /or they want there boat to be .
