I do not understand why you want to varnish the bottom of the boat ? I have restored many classics over the years and have a 1960 # 16 ft Century resorter that i am restoring at the moment and over the summer i have put on all new coverboards ,aft deck ,one transom board , and two new boards on both sides of the hull and planning on more every few weeks .But nun the less let me know if you are talking hull side's or the running surface because i have used many different makes of varnish over the years including Epifanes.

Yes ! this is not for me just a freind who keeps on asking me Questions and I try to help the older guy out He thinks all you do is Varnish every dam thing and I dont have a Clue about this stuff . Sorry Big Guy, Thanks for any Help this boat is only a little run about with old old johnson o/b.

Almost all the old cedar strip boats were varnished all over back in the 50 & 60's. Factory finishes looked great. Too many coats with time by brush started to look ratty. Spray finish was always nicest but not easy stuff to spray. Never thin varnish with thinners to spray it.

www.jamestownditributors.com is where i get all my varnish from and have tried them all .....which are all about the same a few better then others including the price i like to go with a high build varnish for 60%of the job and move on to a high gloss and interlux has a new varnish out that i like very much which is there Compass and Schooner Gold but to tell you the truth i have been using Z *Spar for many years and i would like to mention that Epifanes is also a fantastic varnish that has an awsome gloss . I guess the bottom line is you kinda gotta pick and choose depending on you pocket book .

Lots of UV inhibiters is very important.
There's a difference in brands on this point.
It's been too many years to make a reccomendation.

Sorry Big Guy, Thanks for any Help this boat is only a little run about with old old johnson o/b.Personally , instead of Varnishing the bottom i would go with four or five coats of a CPES pentrating epoxy sealer which give's a look of varnish but more durable & made by Smith & CO or any epoxy for the bottom only and Varnish for the Hull sides and Decks............. anyway's just my 2 cents .

If a person wants a natural finish on the bottom, then Artie's right.
However, epoxy stands up very poorly in strong UV, so it'll have to be replaced pretty frequently.
I suppose a longer lasting solution is to use a penetrating epoxy, followed by several coats of varnish w/large amounts of UV inhibitors.
The good thing about varnish is you can simply scuff the surface and add another coat every several months. It's a pretty painless operation.
