Offshore Powerboat Association (OPA) to Sanction
Lake Erie Boat Week’s “Fastest Boat on Lake Erie” Competition
Six-Day Boating Festival Set for September 7-12, 2010

Huron, Ohio (August 12, 2010) – Janie Vogel, Event Creator and Director of the Lake Erie Boat Week event, has entered into an agreement with the Offshore Powerboat Association (OPA), an internationally recognized professional offshore powerboat racing sanctioning body, to support and sanction Lake Erie Boat Week’s “Fastest Boat on Lake Erie” Competition, to be held September 11-12, 2010, as part of a six-day event.

Lake Erie Boat Week is a national boating festival to be held September 7-12, 2010, with activities to be held on Lake Erie and surrounding areas.

The “Fastest Boat on Lake Erie” Competition event for powerboats will take place Saturday and Sunday, September 11-12, 2010. There will be a starting and ending marks on Lake Erie, and all boats will have their speed measured by radar gun (and/or GPS) after a stretch of water to get up to speed. The boat racing lane will be a single lane, running from east to west on Lake Erie – all within easy view of the public off of the pier along the Huron River and in front of the Nickel Plate Beach, allowing many viewing areas throughout the afternoon. Boats will be divided into classes based on the boat’s top speed. They will get practice runs (single boat runs) on Saturday, and will draw for their spots to take the shot at the title for their class on Sunday. The boat with the fastest speed will be named the “Fastest Boat on Lake Erie” for each class, and own the bragging rights to that title for the following year.

For more information about the “Fastest Boat on Lake Erie” Competition, including classes (open to all boats no matter if a class to fit that boat entry is listed – please inquire), entry forms and general rules, or the Lake Erie Boat Week event, please visit the official event website at www.LakeErieBoatWeek.com.

Lake Erie Boat Week is a new event to the area, but is expected to attract 75,000+ people and potentially $5 million to the local Erie Islands economy. The Lake Erie Boat Week event will consist of the Nationwide Insurance Powerboat Regatta, and the “Fastest Boat on Lake Erie” Competition held on Lake Erie, in the massively popular Lake Erie Shores and Islands region.

“To develop a new race site, the OPA needs a race producer to stand up and take on the enormous task of working with the local community to put together a first-class event,” stated Ed Smith, President, OPA Racing LLC. “Janie Vogel has been the one to raise her hand and offer to take on this responsibility on Lake Erie, an incredibly potent atmosphere to showcase powerboat racing. Over the past two years we’ve watched Janie try to get something off the ground for the benefit of the entire area.

“In order to help Janie this year, OPA will provide on-water insurance, inspectors, a few race teams and rescue divers. This will not be an OPA Race, however, it will be run as an OPA event, following the OPA rulebook and safety guidelines. It is our intention to support Janie’s efforts this year by helping her to run a safe and successful event with the hope of turning this into a full-blown OPA racing event in 2011.”

Janie Vogel is extremely excited about the renewal of the business relationship between the OPA and Lake Erie Boat Week, which was generated two years ago.

“This is going to be a fantastic event for people of all ages,” Vogel said. “We’ll kick off the week with the Nationwide Insurance Powerboat Regatta, designed to bring people into the community and then send them out into the area to enjoy everything the Lake Erie Shores and Islands region has to offer! Then the “Fastest Boat on Lake Erie” Competition boats, now supported by the OPA, will put on a huge show for anyone who comes to the shores of Lake Erie to watch! I’ve designed a lot of other promotional opportunities and entertainment to keep people happy every day of the event. We’ve got a great lineup of bands and other entertainment options – both on land and water - to offer the community. The park and surrounding areas will be filled with vendors offering great food and fun merchandise, too. Whether you are a boater, enjoy the water, or just want to spend an afternoon in a beautiful park by the river, Lake Erie Boat Week will have something to keep you entertained every hour of the day! I can’t wait to build toward many more successful years of Lake Erie Boat Week activities.”

The next Lake Erie Boat Week volunteer meeting (for boats, boat owners, and land-based manpower) is scheduled for Thursday, August 19, 2010, at 6:30 PM, located at "i5's" on Main Street in Huron, Ohio. Volunteer applications (which can be sent/faxed at any time) can be found on the www.LakeErieBoatWeek.com website.

Vendor, advertising, VIP packages and sponsorship opportunities are still available for the inaugural Lake Erie Boat Week event. Please check out the official event website at www.LakeErieBoatWeek.com for more information, or contact the Event Director, Janie Vogel, at (440) 915-7627, racingpr@oh.rr.com, www.LakeErieBoatWeek.com.

Nice to have another Great Lakes event.

Is this why the Atlantic City race date was moved out a week?

No, it just worked out that way. I believe A/C has a boat show the week before the race and we'll use the same lot for the dry pits that they use for the on land portion of the show.

Lake Erie Boat Week is cancelled! Promoter has failed to meet her obligations and the City of Huron has terminated the contract! Two years in a row for this failed venture.:(
