Inaugural bad influence offshore Brian Miller unofficial, loosely organized, extremely voluntary run to Michigan City. Departure point will be either East Chicago or Hammond...arrival will be in Michigan City just in time to see the raceboats from the Great Lakes Offshore Grand Prix be craned in for practice. Possible party on the docks or at Mateys to follow (suggestions are welcome). Slipping in overnight at MC and watching the races Sunday is highly recommended...but your own responsibility.

Who's in?

We'll figure something out...you Mike (Reaves), Mike(Stroud) and Mike (Case) will already be there...I might just head out as well to make it 4 Mikes...we'll have to meet the run at Portage or something and then all come in together.

You'd be fine making the run from East Chicago...but if you are sweatin' it, just put in at Portage. Kinda looks like we'll be hooking up there w/the two groups. You gotta remember...you've probably got one of the baddest 25s out there!

Guess I need more seat time. Can`t use the power if I`m in the air,(and thats alot when the waves are bigger) and I`m never sure when the drive is coming out of the water i`m afraid if I don`t throttle back i`ll kill my brand new drive so I drive slower.

Two weekends ago I had tabs at 7 (way down) that seemed to make it better.. I don`t know if thats right or not

Last weekend was awesome.. 70mph+ no problem in that water. Two weekends ago it was like a washing machine anything more than 30mph and the kids started screaming. Me and my ski were like one I knew its every move, and I loved getting air, now everytime the drive comes out I`m like ****.

I must become one with the boat like the ski haha

Come out for a ride in some "bigger" water with one of us. The best way to learn is first to see how and feel how it's done. The tipping point for me was driving at night in some waves...you are FORCED to drive by feel...and it works. I'd be happy to show you what I know...believe me, I am very familiar with the position you are in right now. In my first boat, I was just amazed at how fast others could go while I was constantly bangin' the rev limiters coming out of the water. I'll send you a pm with my number...if it's bumpy this weekend, I'd be happy to take you for a spin.

And Jason...time is kinda tbd...but I was thinking 9 or 9:30 meetup for the "western" crew at EC or Hammond.

Emailled Jason yesterday with our basic plan, and he seems suitably enthused. We're going to have boats leaving from Hammond, East Chicago, Michigan City and Portage... I think we'll just have to pick a time to meet at Portage, then make a big group run to MC. Jason is talking with the Harbormaster to see if he can get us slips and/or spots on the wall to raft up. He is on vacation right now, but said he'd get back to me on Tuesday. As of now, if you want a slip for the weekend, it's every man for themselves.

PLACE: Portage, i.e. Burns Ditch

TIME: 12 NOON

Be there.

Plan will be to run TOGETHER...just a cruise...55-60 mph...with the Python and/or Joe's Fountain in the lead. Then we idle in at M/C and raft up (I'm planning on rafting even though I will have a slip for later in the evening). After that, you are on your own. Enjoy the races, roll over to Mateys, have cocktails on the boats...JUST HAVE FUN.

And don't do anything Brian wouldn't do...which leaves the door pretty much wide open.

I have a feeling there is going to be quite a few boats in this group who arent gonna be happy cruising at 55.

What i am thinking, we all stay together at a comfortable cruising speed around 55ish. Then once we get within about a mile from MC, I give the signal, and basically everyone who wants to just runs their boats the way Brian would have wanted, tabs up, drives out, and throttles down.

Basically do a 20+ boat driveby of michigan city. 40+ big blocks singing at 5k rpm or better. Do a little pass, then swing around and head into the harbor. Michigan City will know the chicago boys are "comin in a little hot"

Oh, and some twin whackas screaming too..

Absolutley safety first. Lets try to keep the pack somewhat spread out once we get close to MC, and when it comes time to drop the hammer, please, no sudden moves. We dont need anyone deciding to crack a u-turn when theres 15+ boats coming up hot behind them.

Like Andy says, we reach the big condo building, and shut it down. Re-group, and head into town.

How do you propose we do that? All swim up in a circle? This is NOT going to be that complex. Just drive your boat to Michigan City and raft it.

I don't think i'm gonna make it. Ive been trying to buy parts to make the props fit, but the guy at speed& custom marine won't answer his phone or return calls. With so little time that nabbers left us to get the boat done; too many things have needed to go right and they're not. This has left me depending on good freinds to accomplish stuff that is my responsibility, I don't like putting that on them. I guess it just was'nt ment to be and I won't force the issue. Leo, I'll be launching at Michigan City at about 11 on Friday. The ramp there isn't too bad...the pier is just a bit short so it requires another person to hold the boat.

Portage has a VERY nice ramp...just make sure you use the center lane or the far lane...the one nearest to the building is short (yeah...I know from experience...almost ripped the front axle off a couple years ago!).

Here's the way I look at it, Weather sucked when Brian passed but do you remember how bright the sun was shining after the funeral luncheon? In June camp had a luau in his honor and the weather was awful the few days before. So bad that Papi-Chulos power was out that saturday morning and Kelly was able to bring the food for the 300 person party they had to cancel to camp. Up until recently I was not one to believe in signs or anything but more and more I feel like he's looking out for all of us the way some things have happened.

Looking forward to the weekend and meeting everybody. I'm planning on launching at Trail creek marina, is there anything to be aware of? Also, I'm wondering how long of an anchor line do I need? Does everybody anchor or just float to watch the race?

Thanks Morry

Morry we will also launch in the creek Friday. That is where we put in last year and had no trouble at all. If the lake is as flat as they are saying getting a good hook should not be a problem. It was very windy last year and we were hooked good.

The ramp and pier is short. You can get in just use caution. Law requires at least 150' of anchor line on da big pond.

VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!

This is getting pretty big, and I know most of us are fairly experienced with running in a group, but lets BE CAREFUL...especially if we do the fly-by off Michigan City. Last year, the spectator fleet was quite large, and composed of more than a few boating imbeciles. They will NOT expect our arrival, they will not expect us to be moving as fast as we will be, and they WILL get in the way. STAY WAY OFFSHORE!

ALSO...should you do the flyby and turn to go back, CHECK BEHIND YOU before you turn!

This has been a public service announcement from a guy who always worries about these things.

So what you are saying is everyone should zig zag back in forth in front of each other and not pay attention to where they are going :driving: Sounds like pretty easy directions to follow...ha ha.

As long as everyone uses a little common sense and is aware of their surroundings, everything should go very smoothly and it should be the start to a great day.

Sorry to hear that. Supercharged motors are harder on drives. With 600HP blower motor in front of a bravo, you gotta be gentle with them to make them live, especially on lake michigan. Kurt Miller is good people.

So far saturday's run took out two bravo drives...other one was in front of a supercharged 502 also in a 38 Formula.

Thats boating right ? lol Man I was really hoping to get more than 20 hrs on a builtup drive. I`m so bummed right now.
I`ll take the blame if need be but my friend was watching the rpms and me working the throttles, he says I was cutting back on the throttles sometimes even when I didn`t need to as the rpms never went up all that much.
I was going balls out finally after babying it all summer..
I would know if I over revved right? Just trying to go over it ion my head to learn from any mistakes.
The last drive died on the river doing 50mph.
This is like having a Z06 and only being able to do 70mph in fear of the rear braking. That sucks.. Maybe I need to detune the blower with a bigger pulley:leaving:

I love the boating community thou.. after we broke I called up a couple we met at boaters and they drove out to tow us in. then hooked us up with a slip overnight then had us on the boat all day Sund. and helped us get the boat out of the water.. great people out there

Sometimes drives break while romping on them. Sometimes they let go several hours later after romping on them.

The thing with throttling is, yea, you dont want to ween the engines while coming out of the water, but you also dont want to completely pull off the throttles and hammer back in it. Loading and unloading the drive is hard on them. Its really a science. One that im still learning, but getting better.

say your crusing along at 70mph, and you hit a wave, and boat gets some air. If you pull the throttle back to idle, prop barely spinning, you re-enter at nearly 70mph again. The water will grab that prop, and wanna twist it back to 70mph. With no help from the engine to get it spinning where the water wants it to, the drive is absorbing alot of twist.

Not sure if im making any sense. Theres a few in our group who can really run there boats thru some $hit, and not break stuff. Mike Sommers is one of them, his boat gets some serious air time in big water, but he manages to keep up with the bigger, heavier, and faster boats. Been on the boat with Magic medicine, and his boat also likes to fly. He does a good job keeping it under control. Obnoxus runs a big heavy boat on bravos, and loves to play in the rough, he can also show you a few tips.

When learning to throttle your boat you have to become "one" with the boat, become part of the boat. Listen to what it tells you. Brian Miller Jr, gave Mikey a tip on going out and night in some waves and throttle by feel not by sight, try that sometime. Better yet come on one of our boats or let us drive yours and show you how its done.:driving::driving::driving:

I run twin 575's and had two new "built" cryo'd, polished, ect XR's done last year. Both chunked out at around 4 hours. Not a failure but would have been if I had not pulled the cap to check them out. The XR gear sets have been pulled from being manufactured here in the states to being produced overseas. Mercury has several forging partnerships and unfortunatly, the blend in the forging process has caused massive casualties amongst gearsets within the last 3-4 years. My builder talked me into switching to XZ's and building them up like we did the XR's. So far we have approx. 25 hours hours on them with great results. Just did the fluid change prior to this weekends run and had the typical metal on the magnet from the breakin. I dont beat my stuff but I do run it. I will be staying away from XR's especially since I am running blowers... they dont seem to like the added torque...especially this new forging.

Ive heard stuff like this. Back when I ran TRS, I heard that the reproduction gears they were making today were junk.

It really sucks today that they dont offer drives that can handle power. Back in the 80's, speedmaster drives were commonly found on bigger go fasts. way stronger than any bravo, and back then, 600HP was considered big power. Nowadays, 600HP is moderate power, but other than a big money #6, what choices do you have.

Them old ssm 3a drives were behind many big heavy wave crushers with big Horsepower. Guys used to romp on them things all day, and rarely did you hear of twisted shafts, broken gears, etc. If they broke it was water contamination, or simply poor maintance.

Theres a guy on the boards, joe900sc. he has a 35 Fountain, that came with bravos. He had Jerry Stark at oasis marine in chicago convert it to the old ssm III drives. He runs 800HP keith eickerts thru them, and no drive issues. I highly doubt bravo's will last more than a 1/2 season on that setup boating on lake michigan. I dont care if you are bobby saccenti.

When the Bravo style drive came out in 1988, merc was still manufacturing TRS drives. The biggest engine you can get in that era coupled to a bravo was the 454/365HP mag motor. If you opted for the 454/420HP, you got TRS.

Yeah, unless you drop the coin on the nxt or #6, failures are bound to happen with big horsepower... especially on the big lake. Its all a matter of time but at least my builder gives me a 2 year warranty no questions asked...
