Brought the red boat home this weekend...fired her up on the hose to warm up the oil prior to a change...oil/power steering coolers on BOTH engines cracked over the winter! I think at least one had a slight crack last year...some water must've been left in there and finished the job. Fortunately...as of right now, the rest of the stuff looks good..no water in the oil or anything. Changed the oil in both motors and swapped out gear lube in the drives...and HUGE thanks to OBNOXUS for coming over and getting the bad coolers out so they can be welded.

I'll get her all polished up and looking good in the meantime, so when they come back, we can slap them back in and hit the water.

Oh...and BY ALL MEANS fill your boats in Indiana right now...gas by my house is $3.09...I saw $2.77 at a Pilot over in Hoosierland...topped my tanks off at $2.87 in Portage.

Mike, I've probably have 2 coolers at home for that! You won't be able to beat the price. Thanks for everything you did for me on friday. Brian

You probably have 14 coolers! But I need the combo-cooler that is specific to the 502 EFI...power steering AND oil. Hopefully the weld/braze solution will be quick and easy...and cheaper!

Ran into a similiar situation with my water circulation pump got it changed on Sunday. Need to get it in the water to test.

I have plenty of coolers at my house unfortunately they won't be much help to you.

Those coolers aint cheap! Cheaper than a engine block though. Glad to hear ya got it straightened out though. My buddy had this happen to his trans cooler one year. Froze and popped the end cap off. He had it soldered back up and all good.

Not true! I just know I'll have to pull the line off the cooler this fall!

Or...hopefully...I'll be pulling the motors OUT of the boat this fall for some refreshing. :sifone:

It doesn't take Einstein to winterize a boat. This past winter was not even a "cold" winter.

Mike, did u use antifreeze or just drain everything? Or both?

redhotsommer
04-27-2010, 09:34 AM
Both. That's what has me scratchin' my head...for some reason it must've stayed in the cooler instead of draining down.

OBNOXUS
04-27-2010, 12:23 PM
very strange,,, I popped the ends off the coolers thinking id find debris in there that held water,,,,,nope.

And his are the highest part of the engine. TRES BIZARRE !!!!!

yet another reason to run the antifreeze through the motor instead of pouring it down the tstat housing !!!

Yeah...perhaps I'll do it that way next season.

Actually...I might just have had my mind on other things...winterized right after Brian died. However...I am sure I did it the same way I always have.

And Joe...number 1...there's no Huffy's here...and number 2...I'm ALWAYS riding! Michelle's new road bike just got here...mmmm...carbon fiber...guess where I'll be tonight.

30 years of winterizing boats I always drain as much of the water as I can pull the thermostat out, hook up by bucket of antifreeze to the fresh water intake and start the motor and pump 5 gallons though. Knock on wood never a problem.

Lucky that is all that broke.

Maybe when he pulled his drain plugs on the blocks, some water came out, but then got plugged up with sand, and he still had water in there. Then he poured his a/f in, mixing with the water. Those coolers prob crack pretty easy. I bet the pink stuff when diluted dont work real well. If that was the case, lets be happy it was just a cooler that cracked!

Every year i gotta stick a small screwdriver or coat hanger up those block drains to clear them out, and bingo, out comes alot more water. At least when you run a/f thru the engine, any remaining water gets mixed up with the a/f. Pouring it in manually and letting it sit, just dont seem like its gonna mix up thru the entire water system. I like to see pink from the sea strainer to the tailpipe.

BTW, Mike, dont think im over analzying this topic on ya. Just like to learn how to keep this kind of stuff from happening. Doing the pour in method several years back, cost me a sea pump housing come spring. :)

Winterization...what's that?

1) Lower outboards to drain all water out.
2) Change lower unit gear lube.
3) Disconnect batteries.
4) Done

Nothing to it:willy_nilly:
