View Full Version : 70's and 80's Caddy's?

I am thinking about buying one. Under $20k. Maybe even under $10k (the 80's cars are fairly cheap).

I dont care about investment value. I just want a cool kind of weird car to drive around Toronto in. Thinking an Eldorado Biaritz Ragtop. Thinking either 1976 or I even like the 1984 like this one (same year I was born).

if you go 80's the 368 is a good motor, just do not get one with the 4-6-8 valve shut off solenoids on it, and stay away from the ht4100's

LOL. I had a 1981 Eldo. It was brown and tan two-tone. It got totalled, but probably saved my life because it was so big and heavy!! :(:smash: I'll look for some pictures. It had a diesel in it from the factory, but when I got it the dealer had replaced the POS diesel with an Olds 350. It was an awesome car!!!:driving::cheers2:

My dad had brand new 1983 Eldorado Biaritz. loaded.

He still talks about how much he loved that car.

I have always loved the Cadillac brand in general. I think one of these would be a great car just to drive in the Spring/Summer/Fall up here.

Not too much to worry about because it is only a $10k car but it still has a very unique look and apparently they are nice to drive.

Also probably wont get me pulled over and ticketed as much as my Z06.....lol.

Adam, out here there's still TONS of reasonably priced '60s and '70s Caddies. It's been my experience that '80s cars in general are a total maintenance nightmare and the styling is questionable in my opinion.

If I was going to buy an old Caddy, I'd probably go for one of the 4 door Coupes (no door posts) from the mid 60s or if I really wanted something absurd, maybe an early '70s Fleetwood. You'll get the most motor with the least semifunctional crap bolted to it that way...

My old man had a '68 Coupe De Ville (brown with tan landau top and interior), '72 Fleetwood (green on green), '78 Fleetwood (Brown again), '83 Fleetwood (dk blue with lt blue interior, and the car I learned to drive on) and an '88 Fleetwood (front drive pile of crap that my designated driver totalled in Niagara Falls one night). I still get the itch from time to time...

The only 70's one to buy is a 1970-72 DeVille with the 472 motor. In 70 the only GM car that put out more HP/TQ was the big block Corvette. I think the 472 came out in 68 but the styling was different. The styling of the 70 is the "Boss Hog" one from Dukes of Hazzard. The Eldorados are fun with 500 ci motors but they were only 190 HP! All the Eldorados in the late 60's through the 90's were front wheel drive.

A 472 powered car is what I would look for. My buddy inherited one from his grandfather and that thing burned rubber up and down the block! Unfortunately the humidity and rain rotted the body like swiss cheese. He was keeping it to build a late model Chevy pickup with that 472 but it got towed off from a property he sold and it ended up in the crusher. Tow yard wanted like $1500 for it (after towing, storing it) and he laughed when they couldn't find anyone to sell it to and scrapped it.

Look at used limo's also.....you can buy them cheaper in some instances and sometimes they will have lower miles/ better condition than a sedan (as long as they weren't commercial use). A early 80's Caddy limo with some cool paint, wheels and big stereo would be a great bar hopping car!

The 70´500 had 550ft.lbs torque and 400 hp...no Corvette had over 500 of torque or any other GM Bigblock except the 70´ Buick 455.
Hp wise the Chevelle was the king not the Corvette @ 450 on the 1970 LS-6. The highest on paper for Corvette was 435hp for the 69´Tripower L-71 427 but everybody knows thats only the official number as the L-88´s and ZL-1´s dynoed form everything between 525-585 and if went below 525 Gross on the dyno those hand assembled motors were not installed in a car.

i had a 76 Coupe deville, and my buddy had a 73 Couple deville. Mine had the 500CI, his the 472CI. The 472 was more powerful. But the 500 still had a lot of torque. The 500 in mine idled so low, and exhaust with muffler and resonator, you could barely hear it running. super smooth engine.

Mine was triple black, his was a pale yellow, white vinyl top. Needless to say, the black one was the looker. Sold it a couple years ago for 7500. It had 50k orig miles. I had it repainted when i bought it, they did a great job redoing it.

Those 80's caddy were underpowered, and engines were not too good. Had a 81 Coupe with the 4100, sucked. There is a company/builder that specializes in caddy 472's and 500's that can make some big power. Would have loved to have about 700FT lbs in that black 76 coupe!

Buy an 86 with 4100 Adam. I could use the increase in income :)

seriously, look no newer than a 71. Last of the good ones.

The mid to late 70,s cars literally fell apart.Interior trim pieces were made from very brittle plastic. I haven't worked on one in decades that wasn't falling apart.

The 60's Cads were the nicest. Huge, solid, powerful, early versions of every toy imaginable. Power everything.
Only issue was rust and lots of it.

Our 66 DeVille ( gold on gold ) looked like this
http://www.chooseyouritem.com/classics/photos/1322000/1322181.1966.Cadillac.DeVille.2-Door.Sedan.jpgand our 68 Brougham ( green on black) looked like this http://tumblesonauto.com/showimg.php?id=172disappeared from the bottom up.

Anything from the 80's is a POS. I spent many, many hours fixing those things and I sure as h ell wouldn't own one.

10-12 years ago I worked at an independent shop specializing in Rolls Royce's we had more than few "eccentric" owners. One had a '71 or '72 Eldo ragtop. He found a company called Cadillac Motor Development, which is what became cad500parts.com I think.

He bought a cam kit, intake, and carb rebuild kit. We put it all on his car for him, and put a basic shift kit in the trans. That thing would haul Azz!!! It was a lot of fun to drive.

He actually did the build because he found a Amphicar in Arizona he wanted to buy. So he built the Caddy up to be his tow vehicle. He drove it to Arizona, bought a flatbed trailer and the Amphicar and towed it back.

Hell those prices are over the double than overhere for almost identical cars...
For starters project eldos ( some trim parts missing little or no rust to speak of needs a soft top) start at 6000 bucks in running condition

There´s a black I seriously consider but if it´s not black originally I´m not that much interested.
Colours that top my list for Eldos are White Gold and Black, in fact white and black seems to follow many my favourite stuff.

My old man did some towing back in the days with some Cadi's he used to have. Although I don't remember taking the boats out of the ramps with them. I do remember remember he would have the boat lifted off the trailer on straps and into the water and out of the water and back onto the trailer. I really love the late 70's early 80's.:sifone:

Cadillac did not make a real one since 78 in my opinion, I grew up with about any caddy from 53-78, thats all dad would drive, once they got small he wanted nothing to do with them..

I love the 75-76 Eldo verts! and 500CI!

I've had a '78, '81, three '84 coupes, and a '70 deville convertible, as well as another 3-4 parts cars including a '90 fleetwood. Anytghing eith a 4100 is junk the 368 ci came in 80 and 81 I believe and in '81 had the 8-6-4, if you disconnected it though they were good engines, any late '70's to early '80's should be very cheap. My favorite car that was a blast was a 1978 Buick electra, had two, one had a worked 403 olds and was a blast. but the 60's to 1970 are the best and i sold my '70 convertible for 13k, so you can still get them reasonably..... dunno how to post pics or i would

Those Seville's S U C K E D stock! The car is at $108.50 right now, for a joke I would own it for $200....anything past 200 bucks and it becomes robbery!

The older Seville is basically a Chevy Nova with a little bit longer wheelbase...and the first US car to have Multipoint EFI ( Same as the TPI basically).

Utter crap IMO ..sorta like the Catera....

was that white interior with the red inserts factory? I have never seen that on a Caddy before....notice they didn't take a good shot of the interior in the pics! Car looks well bought for 11K if it is really a 47K mile car and everything works.
