Well, I havent posted much on my on going project, so here it goes....

Intro:
After graduating school, my fiance got a job offer in Wisconsin. She was originally was working in NYC while I finished of my schooling in Cleveland. We both decided WI would be a good place since she had an offer and there was allot of industry for me to find work. I knew it would be tough leaving my family, Pop's, and the Top Gun. Yes, the cig is not exactly mine. My job was to drive it and keep it running. I did all the work on it except for writing the checks. How lucky was I!! On the weekends I must have looked like the biggest punk kid. That was funny considering on the weekdays I was driving back and forth to school in my rusted out Suzuki Samurai..... Since I payed for my college through co-oping, we thought to name the boat "College Tuition".... :) That never happend.

After moving up to WI and deciding on what Job offer to take, I found a 21" Apache Scout on Ebay.... I fell In love. I always knew I wanted one. Especially one with an outboard. I felt an outboard was best for being up North. No major winterization needed. This meant boating almost all year was an option. It just depended on how crazy one wanted to be. Funny thing, last weekend up here it was a high of 59°F. Yes, I would have went out. Ang agreed and so we bought it site unseen. We were totaly excited. My buddy lived an hour away in Jax, ItsPeanut picked it, made the transaction, and towed it up to Cleveland for me.

Speaking with the owner before I purchased, He said the boat was Mint!! He just replaced the water pump, carbs rebuilt, and 2 new batteries installed so the new owner was good to go..... I know this is when everybody and myself would say "Should have gotten a Survyer". I agree, I just couldnt justify spending the money on that and a plane ticket down to check it out considering the agreed upon selling price.

Well, I got the boat and this is what I found.......

Ok, So it must be sand & dirt from the storing a dirty Anchor............ NOPE!!

I eat, sleep, drink, read everything to do with boats since I was 5 years old. I even worked at a local marine store and moved my way up from a B.N. to the main mechanics assitent before I went to school for my engineering degree. For my fellow Notherners including myself, This boat was an all you can eat crab legs night for Termites. I HAVE NEVER IN MY LIFE, along with others, EVER HEARD OF THIS.....

FYI, I dont believe the seller is on the forums nor do I care. The only resolution that was made was by me!! Do I fix it or sell it in the condition it is.... I knew I could not sell it. I could not scew anyone over intentionally..... I dont have that in my heart.. No matter of the circumstances. I decided on my only other alternative... FIX IT. Unfortunately my better half did not understand the whole story nor did I want to explain it to her. We enjoyed using the boat 3 times on the river in Milwaukee before I started to slowly strip the boat down.... Yes we wore life jackets the whole time and took it very easy

So it brings me to a good year ago, pondering on my choices.... I called various glass guys to get some estimates......... over the phone... Yes, I am not that much of an idiot but I had to start somewhere. How can anyone give an estimate on replacing all the wood on a boat over the phone, now thats funny. Luckly they were all nice and gave me a guarantied starting price... :) After hearing the quotes I contemplated scuttling it. The prices to fix compared to spent was to close..... But, I knew I couldnt scuttle it!! He**, I would have bought the boat in the condition it was if i got a better price knowingly the work that needed to be done. I love this stuff to much to see any great high perf boat get chopped up and sent to the top of the hill in a dumpster..

(By no means am I looking for a pitty party... This is where I was last year this time and just wanted to give some preface to the story of how I got to where I am.. :) )
So the work began starting to strip the boat....

Talk to a local pest control guy and see if they will treat your hull or sell you some Termidor to kill the termites. Your hull is super thick, cored with plywood if its like mine.
I would assess the damage and remove what wood is damaged and then shoot epoxy into the voids. These hulls are built like a tank to begin with so after the repairs I would not sweat it a bit.
Consult a pro for sure but the little Apaches are way overbuilt for strength.

U know i would of done it all for u by now !!!! ?????:seeya:

The termites you have are land termites and got in the boat while at storage I´d say.

I´ve lived up with wooden boats all my life, did a 32 footer sailboats deck with my dad back in the day too ( after I split the deck and mast in a storm when a shroud let go)
There´s "termites" (clams) in the water too and especially in the tropics but thats a thing of the past mainly from the wooden sailship years that wood in the ships got eaten up.
With all the varnish and bottom paints if taken care a wooden boat is not a problem like a rotten plank isn´t either.

Well,
Before I go any Further, I want to thank the following people that have greatly helped me thus far.....

1. The First has to be "GlassDave"!! He has awnsered every Question I had no matter where he was!! He took my call when he was at his marina party, In NYC for SBI, and even when he was driving to Maryland for a race. Without him I would still be reading the WestSystems book.....

2. Second is my buddy "ItsPeanut" who pushed me to work on it any given free time I have! He knew I could do it but also saw how much work it needed / still needs. All I can hear him say is "Dude, Your never going to get it done be next summer.... :)"

3. Third, My pops who never got tired of hearing about it and always wanted updates. He even came up and helped me bond a stringer together. I really have him to thank getting into this mess.... He got me started in the boating stuff when I was young enough to sit on his lap and drive... :)

4. Finally, the most important person is my fiance, Ang!! She is ok with all the hours I put in on it and cant wait to finally get back out on it. She is my Only / Main Glass Girl. She has helped out more than she can understand. She has helped me glass in all the wood so far!!!!

So, With every thing stripped out of the boat except for the dash components, it was time to take out the removable floor over the gas tank....

J-Bonz
12-01-2009, 08:51 PM
There was a "cabin" floor that I had to cut out with it. That must have not been put in from Bobby S. It seamed to me to be a Hack job. I was not impressed with that.

J-Bonz
12-01-2009, 08:53 PM
Looking through all the pics, one can see all the saw dust and mud trails every were!! I couldnt wait till the day I did not see any of that!!

12-01-2009, 08:59 PM
Funny thing is at this point, I had the boat stored inside in a 10' x 30' Storage unit. At that time I was looking for a shop to rent to rent out. I just knew I could not do what needed to be done by working out of the storage unit with only cordless tools.... :) But, at the time that was the only option I had at the moment. I didnt know anyone up here nor could I find a place since we live out in a rural area. The closest thing I coud find was a shop with electricity only for $550 a month........... I almost had a heart attack!!!

cigdaze
12-01-2009, 09:06 PM
Fvckin' Termites. I hate 'em. They're a constant worry down here, but never have I seen a boat attacked like that.

In any event, it's cool piece of history, and I'm sure a great little rocket. Good luck with the resto and we look forward to the progress.

That was fall time last year.... In december I towed it up to Little Tommy's buddys place and stored it over the winter till the middle of March. While looking and looking, I placed an add on CL looking for a "Shop". Low and behold, sometime in march I landed a great shop that had a large overhead door, heat, AC, and a compressor for a good Deal, I was back in buisness!! Hears some pics in winter storage...

J-Bonz
12-01-2009, 09:16 PM
On ward to the shop...... I towed it there some time in March and slowly started to work in it only on the weekends.... Luckly, when I backed it in there was already a lift I could use to take the engine off. I was happy about that..

J-Bonz
12-01-2009, 09:18 PM
Some more of it in the shop...

J-Bonz
12-01-2009, 09:31 PM
After a shopping spree at Harbor Frieght and Menards, it was time to start working.. But, I already ran into the perverbial fork in the road. I new the transom definately needed to be replaced. Throught the hole in the transom that the speedo hose went through, I was able to slide a 1' tie wrap all the way in.... :O To replace the transom I needed to either split the top deck from the hull or cut out the inner cockpit liner... As with glass work, form what I learned thus far, there is neither a correct way.... The poison I picked was to cut out the liner.... Here some pics I sent to Glass Dave & DareDevil to get there opinion................. The read line I photo shopped in was where I was going to cut.

J-Bonz
12-01-2009, 09:37 PM
After talking with the pros, I decided not to cut on the corner but decided in the middle of the "shelf". To decrease the amount of glass chipping, I used blue painters tape to cover up the glass..... Did it help, may bee. I decided to use a roto zip in the thin areas and a jig saw through the thicker areas. O yeah, I did get the engine off at this point also...

J-Bonz
12-01-2009, 09:47 PM
To cut out the liner, I had to deal with the outboard cut / wash well. That was the only part of the boat I didnt like! I never like the looks of them or the functinallity. I could only think of being broke down in some rough water and having waves crash in to close to the cockpit... I got ballsy and decided to cut it out... :)

J-Bonz
12-01-2009, 09:55 PM
While it look like it took a few simple cuts to get the liner out, that was not the case!! The liner was glassed in the the stingers on the bottom side. I first used a grinder with a tile saw blade to cut it... That worked good when it was able to fit... For the tighter spotts I used a dremel.... That took forever!! I finally got to a point were I could take it any longer.. From standing in the bilge where I cut the well out, I freeking yanked it loose.. I had enough!! Anger at its best. Never the less, I was able to break it free and get it out all by myself...

J-Bonz
12-01-2009, 09:59 PM
Some more....

J-Bonz
12-01-2009, 10:02 PM
To Get the liner out I had to cut some of the knees that connected the top of the stringers to the transom wall. That is were I found some carnage on one side! Surprisingly the other side looked good. But, just like alot of things, you never know whats inside till you start cutting.

J-Bonz
12-01-2009, 10:04 PM
Here are some great shots of the matting peice I cut from the knee in the center pic

Everyone, Thanks for all the kind words....

At this point I was still needed to cut more wood or hollow glass out. Next was the area where the batterys & oil tank were fastened down...

J-Bonz
12-03-2009, 11:38 PM
I knew I was close to cutting out a stringer so I wanted to support the hull as best as I could. First thing I bought were a set of four jack stands from Harbor Freight. I wanted to use the trailer for support but didnt want the boat to move when I climbed in and out. I use the stands to lift the trailer off the ground. Next, I borrowed 4 pad stands to put in all 4 corners of the boat..

Here's some more of the inside... You can see the remenents of the mud trails from the mighty mites.............

J-Bonz
12-03-2009, 11:45 PM
My next steps were to continue cutting out the cabin floor in the front. That needed to get out before I started to tackle a stringer....

J-Bonz
12-03-2009, 11:54 PM
At this point the gas tank was next.. What the heck do you do with ~20 gallons of gas??? I bought 3 five gallon cans and started sifoning the gas out.. Thank god for the neighbor next door! He had a friend living with him that was layed off from work and was more than happy to put all the gas I could give him in his rusted out S-10!! What a win / win situation... After digging all the foam out as best as I could, it was time to pull the tank out... I thought the floor/liner was heavy... The tank was more :O !! But, I am proud to say I got it out!!

Wow!! Big project for a small boat. I think I'm going into my third year on my 24 Pantera, and not as extensive as yours project.
It's looking good, and glad your going about it the right way.
Sometimes these smaller boats like ours don't get the respect I think they deserve.
It gets harder to get things done as they become more expensive. Trust me.
Tearing stuff apart is cheap.
It's when you go to start putting it back together that it gets expensive.
I look forward to following your project.

And the work progressed. These pictures were taken around May 17th. I bought the most expensive resperator I could find at the store and started to grind.... What a nasty job.... That is one thing I dont enjoy! I couldnt beleive how white the shop got. Dust every were!! I found the best thing to use for this was a grinder with a 36 grit "Abrassive Nutted Flap Disc"

J-Bonz
12-06-2009, 01:22 AM
I found out, Dont use the 3M sandblaster flap disc with out using the quick change piece. I had it break apart on me. Thank the lord I was in the right place at the right time. Remenants of it is still stuck in the ceiling of the shop.....

12-06-2009, 01:38 AM
When I did mine, I had an old craftsman 2 speed electric grinder, looked like an impact gun as opposed to a buffer. Put 30 grit on it, low speed, you could put all your weight on it and itwould brown all the lights in the neighborhood but i would just keep digging. Finally gave up on me..it had to have been 35+ years old. If anyone knows where I can get another one or a new set of gears, I would be foever gratefull!

At this point I started to work on getting the Transom boards bonded toghether. After talking to Dave he suggested bonding them outside of the boat. I went with 3 layers of 1/2" marine ply with biax 1300 to connect them together. As Dave would say, It will be a "Bomber" set up :) ! At the same time Ang and I worked on the removable floor. That was eat'n up pretty good. Knowing that it wasnt structually, I followed the West systems book and created a grid patern on the backside and filled with thickend epoxies. I think it came out good.

That was a big task completed. I was happy to have that behind me but, still knew there was alot of work ahead of me.... Before I cut out the stringes, I made some jigs to help keep them in place while glassing them in. I thought I would use my 2 levels to make sure they were straight and vertical and use door shims with the keep them in place. O yeah, I spent almost a whole Sunday making my pattern of the stringer to replace. Talk about art and craft fair. Fyi, I lucked out and found posterboard on sale at walgreens.... 5 cents a sheet... I cleaned them out :) To connect all the pieces together I used a hot glue gun and strips of cardboard to increase the rigidity of them.

J-Bonz
12-06-2009, 03:20 AM
After completing that task I started to utilize after work hours on the weekdays. The first stringer was cut out. Yes I did find more damage from the mites. At this point I didnt care to take to many pics of the distruction. I was over it and was moving on! I started to think more of the fun times to come...

J-Bonz
12-06-2009, 03:27 AM
All the voids in the wood was from the mites......

J-Bonz
12-06-2009, 03:34 AM
Now to the month of September.... The stringer was cut out and alot of grinding needed to be done to make way for the new stringer. Talk about alot of dust!! I found the grinder with the flap disk to do the job the best. I didnt take pics of making the stinger but I bonded together 1/2" thick marine plywood. To get the length and keep the strenght I staggered the joints. To bond together I used the 1300 biax that Dave suggested. Oh yea, I never said but, I did go the epoxy route. I sourced it from US Composites..

J-Bonz

I thought fitting in the stinger would be a breeze. Boy, was I mistaken. This took about a week using after work hours. For this stringer I only used a belt sander. I quickly wisened up after that and bought a planer. That did save alot of time. But remeber, once the wood is taken away, there is no way of adding it back.... "Measure once and cut twice.... or something like that" :)

Thanks for the kind words guys. I will start posting again on the project this weekend. I have to give a shout out to my bud ItsPeanut. He helped out tremendously a few weeks back. In fact, for my birthday present we along with Ang got the outer two stringers installed. Now thats progress!!! Now that the holiday break is over and I am back in WI, the work starts up again..... :)

Alright Nut, pack to posting some pics... From where I left off above. The stringer was fitted and ready to be glassed in. Unfortunately I left the camera at home a few weekends and did not take any pics. Ang and I got it glassed and and I made a template for the starboard stringer. I cut the boards out and my Pops came up to help bond them together. We had a good time! He was happy to see the progress in person.

J-Bonz
01-10-2010, 01:52 AM
With the stinger bonded together, It was time to cut out the existing one. At this time I also cut out the two bulkheads that hold the gas tank in. Once cut out, It was back to the joys of grinding... :)

J-Bonz
01-10-2010, 01:58 AM
I finally got the grinding done and was happy to know I was closer to having the 2 out 4 stringers replaced...

J-Bonz
01-10-2010, 02:04 AM
After the inside was all ground down. The next following week I spent fitting the stringer in. I was happy I broke down and purchased a planer. That definately speeded up the process. Once fitted, Ang came out to help bond the stinger in. The next day while the filler was still tacky we glassed it in..

J-Bonz
01-10-2010, 02:09 AM
To keep the stinger in placed I made some braces. To keep the stinger level and the braces tight, I used wood door shims from the local Menards.

J-Bonz
01-10-2010, 02:12 AM
FYI, Working with the bonding filler I used the West Systems sticks and many of the techniques presented in there books.. I found the braces to work good. It just made it interesting getting out from under the deck. I felt like Twister, Left hand on yellow......

J-Bonz
01-10-2010, 02:24 AM
The next day we got back and put 3 layers of 1700 biax in. Not to many pics, didnt have time...

J-Bonz
01-10-2010, 02:49 AM
After the stringer was installed it was time to replace the bulkheads that hold the gas tank in. Since the inside was prepped already, all I had to do was cut, fit, bond, and glass them in. Again, I left the camera at home for a good amount of the following work. I used the same processes as I did with the stringers. Once installed I decided to tackle the last two stringers at the same time. Winter was coming and I wanted to speed it up. I made a template of one of the stringers and used it to cut all the peices. I bonded them up using to layers of 1/2" ply. In between them, just like the transom, I used one layer of1300 biax and made sure to stagger the joints. I did all the bonding while the shop was clean still from installing the stringers & bulkheads. Once bonded, I then cut out the old and prepared for the new. That brings me to the pics below...

Yeah, It has been a fun project so far.. Alot of work but, still fun.... I will say I did gain alot of respect for guys that do glass work full time!! I just found some of the pictures of the bulkheads going in and thought I would post. The clamps worked great at holding them in place. I used cut up plasitc bags from the store to keep them from direct contact with the thickened epoxy. That worked good! The plastic peeled right off after it was set up...

Next, I will post some pics of the great stringer install with Ang and my buddy Pat.. That should then bring the project up to date. I didnt realize how much time it would take. I also didnt realize how much time I put in on the weekdays at work. That only leaves about 2 hours to work at the shop. Until then, I have to give a shot out to Cash..... :)

Jack, get some of this pics posted. Somehow i deleted them all out of my phone.

Well, Its funny how this boat stuff goes..... I may be young but, I have learned little through the years... Some of the best boating times/stories dont revolve around whether you have the latest & greatest 100 foot cigarette that has more colors on it than a rainbow and can go 200mph.... Its about the genuine people you meet along the way!! While my buddie Patryk, aka ItsPeanut, has not been raised on boating like myself, He has trully been bitten by the bug and its in his blood. He is one of my best friends and I appreciate the freindship. This brings the project progress up to about Dec 10th when I get a phone call saying, "Hey, I am coming up to work on the boat! We are not partying when I come up a**hole! Lets get some stuff done!!" The dude leaves FLA in December to work on a boat in snowy cold Wisconsin..... Got a love it!! Well, I picked him up Thursday night at the airport and we started working Friday morning bonding in the last 2 stringers...

J-Bonz

Well, I have been still working on the boat... I have to thank ItsPeanut for Grinding out the mid ship bulk heads on his last day in WI before heading back to FLA... That gave me a good head start on the front bulkheads.. That was before the holidays. Sometime in January, My pops and good bro brought up my next project. As peanut said above, its been hands off on that till the apache is done....

Well, at this point it was a saturday and it was time to bond them in.. We didnt get out of there until 2:30 am... We did get some help from my buddy Larry that lives next door. He's a great guy and has given me help whenever I needed a third hand...

With a little amount of sleep and a fresh day in front of us we started glass. Ang was rocking on wetting out. She had everything ready when I needed it. Even with all here help, we didnt get out of there until Midnight on a Sunday.... Lets just say work on Monday was a blast!!

J-Bonz
03-15-2010, 12:12 AM
The following week Ang had to take a break... I think she had enough fun glassing so I was all on my own for the remaining 4 pieces I had cut and ready to install... This is pretty much how it sits now. I have started to cut the rear bulkheads out that connect to the hull. I also spent alot of time prepping the cockpit to be re installed in the boat. I just need to figure out how I will fill in the old outboard well........... Glass Dave........... Your phones ringing.............. :)

J-Bonz

No, I didt make a mistake when drilling and cutting yet...... :)

No, I didt make a mistake when drilling and cutting yet...... :)

I only ask because I'm doing about the same thing to my Baja, and I was going to add some ribs and bulkheads but not sure if I should double up the coring in the sides to help distribute the load over a wider area from the bulkhead hard point. Measuring where my bilge pump fitting was I have 3/8" sides and the bottom is 5/8".

And if you are still glassing/grinding a good place to buy cheap suits is Magid glove www.magidglove.com. I've tried a couple different ones and the CVZ3's are a pretty good as far as durability and price. I usually get them 25 at a time and order XXXL's so they don't rip out when I'm contorted all over the place and I can tuck the legs into my shoes to keep my ankles itch-free.
