My local marina gets it through the Sierra catalog. $119 for a 5 gallon pail. I've also had the local O'Reilly Auto Parts store order it for me.

Got it ,,thanks,,,sorry. No problem. Yeah, I didn't beleive the price either when they quoted it and even the guy at the marina was shocked as he said they just re-priced the individual quarts at $15.99/quart. I used to get the 2.5 gallon jugs at Stem to Stern but they went under so I started hunting down other sources and I'm glad I did.

Just a heads up in a pinch Wal Mart here locally carries "Quicksilver HP Gear Lube" by the quart for $9.96. Make sure you grab the right one as "Premium" sits right next to it. It beats the hell out of the only marina here that carries Mercury OEM, they charge 17.00 a quart.

What is the GL rating and weight rating of the Merc Hi-Po Lube? Mobil One LS 75w90 gear lube carries an API GL-5 rating, and has served me well for 15 years. Bel-Ray makes very good stuff, by the way; we've used their shock oil in oour race cars inthe past.

Yes, Bel-Ray makes some great oils and lubes. A great majority of the oils and lubes used in the aviation industry are supplied by Bel-ray. They are tops when it comes to industrial lubrication.

I discovered that from the Merc MSDS sheet (see attached, last page). Now if we can only figure out which Bel-Ray P/N it is, we'd be all set.

My uncle gave me a couple gallons of Belray Polar gear lube he got from work that I use in my jeep diffs. They use it in mining equipment because it is supposedly more water resistant. It's not green, its light brown though. I wonder if they just dye the merc stuff and jack up the price?

Polar is a mineral-based lube. The blue stuff is full syn.

I'm fairly certain that the Merc blue hi-po lube is an SAE 75W-90 lube, which is the equivalent to ISO VG 150.

The most closely matching Bel-Ray gear lubes are:

(1)Bel-Ray SE2 Lubricant, P/N: 63700, ISO VG 150.
Synthetic General Industrial Lubricant.
A technologically innovative synthetic extra heavy-duty gear lubricant
formulated for all types of gearing under severe temperatures and
loads. Effective for plain and roller bearings. See Product Data Sheet
for name grades, temperature ranges and application instructions.

(2)Bel-Ray Synthetic Gear Oil, P/N: 66880, ISO VG 150
Synthetic General Industrial Lubricant.
Totally synthetic hydrocarbon and ester combinations exhibiting
outstanding Extreme Pressure and anti-wear properties as well as
excellent viscosity and temperature properties. This lubricant exhibits
low coefficient of friction in addition to being compatible with mineral
oils.

Sounds like BelRay makes it for Merc and isn't allowed to sell it direct or let anyone know...

For what it's worth, there's a 53-gallon drum of Volvo Penta synthetic 75w90 GL5 oil on ebay:

VOLVO-PENTA-STERN-DRIVE-BOAT-GEAR-OIL-SYNTHETIC (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VOLVO-PENTA-STERN-DRIVE-BOAT-GEAR-OIL-SYNTHETIC-55GAL_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem58813824beQQitemZ380125062334QQptZMotorsQ5 fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories)

for $1900 buy-it-now, or $9/quart. Group buy?
