very nice!

I assume you're going to gable the roof in over the new addition.

That was smart, bring the boat home, measure how much it sticks out, and go equal distance out the back.
Good move.:sifone::26:

No footing or even a frost wall? I hope it doesn't get to cold in your neck of the woods. Frost heaving can be a b!tch.

Nah, I just have to deal with inspectors on a daily basis. It just looked like you poured a slab on the dirt. I have seen it done.:leaving: We just finished a similar addition on my buddies garage. I got tired of him parking his chit in my garage. :D

So no i could care less what some inspector might think.. it passes my inspection and that`s all that matters.

I put steel I-Beams in mine with a travel/crane type hoist deal. Supported on both endswith solid laminates of plywood/wood screwed and glued. Supposed to be good for 4 tons with safety factor according to the engineer who designed it.

Looks good to me. I just spent a ton of money on an addition to my house and the contractor who came highly recommended made the foundation 2" to wide on the side of the house.

I ran out and took a couple.

Mine is a travel gantry type deal. But. If you bought just one I beam to span, directly underneath all the way to concrete/wall base put 2 x 6's laminated screwed and glued with plywood between the full width of the beam for support. And screwed plywood on the inside to minimize bowing instead of drywall, should be good and you can get a chainhoist from Northern or ? to travel on the I-Beam. Make sure you get the heavy wall I beam. I recessed mine into pockets so I could have full 12' clear still.

Your project looks great! keep the pictures coming! Seeing that you guy's have alot of knowledge on the cement foundation stuff. I have a question? I want to lift my garage next year and re-do the concrete under it. Would I need to redo the footing and if so how far down does the footing have to be? Thanks for the help!

Wow that is really a sweet set up! Now the question is if I do as you suggest would it be able to support the boat so I could pull the trailer out? I could probably do two beams on either end weld em together too.. hmmm

There are on-line formula sites for I beam support calculations. Just need to figure your span, weight you want to support, and calculate out the web size and depth.

Are you wanting to redo the floor or the foundation? The depth of your footings depends on the frost depth in your area and if you have inspections etc. In your area you probably need 42" below grade. Check with your county or city and they will give you the requirements.

Looking at your setup, it looks as if you are not nearly high enough to use a system like mine to pull engines, etc. So, instead of spending the money for that type of setup, I'd buy 4 jackstands, rent four hydraulic stands for a day, and lift it off and sit it on stands. I bought 6 stands when I did it so I could move one or two at a time while working on the bottom.

Then you rent them again in the spring to put it back on the trailer, or, like I did, move one stand at a time and slowly put the trailer back under. And that was with a twin engine 39 Vee.

Make sure you construct a solid laminate on both ends for vertical support. And see in the pics where I lagged in the angle iron, then located the beams and had them wire welded. Plywood or OSB inside for lateral strength. etc. Any questions, just ask.

This rain is really killing my progress.

Sunday I got as many friends as I could to help out.. more progress, except I`m stuck on installing the valley flashing and joining the two roofs together. I`m gonna let a pro handle that I guess.

Are you shingling the entire back of the roof or just tryiing to tie into the old shingles?

Tie in to the old shingles..

It's actually not all that hard to do. SHould be some decent books on it at the Home Depot or Lowes etc. Snap a line, cut the shingles, slip the metal valley under, redo. is the short version of what I've seen done with a couple of sealing steps in there..

Trim'd Up
10-27-2009, 09:33 AM
Rat is right. The easiest way would be to do an open valley with metal flashing. Weaving them in would be a pain and your shingles probably won't match. You need to cut the shingles on you existing roof along the valley. Then carefully pull any nails within 8" or so of the cut and slide the metal flashing under. Run 2 beads of roofing cement under the shingles along the entire valley on the metal flashing.

You will probably run into a problem with the layout of the existing roof though where you will end up with too short of shingles to nail close to the valley. Just make sure you keep all nails at the minimum 6"-8" out of the valley, even if you half to cut a shingle back farther and replace with a full one.

It is best to also cut the top edge of the underlying shingle at an angle to keep water from rolling under the shingles. When you lift up the shingles you need to cut off the points. It's kinda hard to explain, but easy to do. It's called dubbing, you can probably find a picture online.

Trimed up when you coming over???lol

I got the open valley flashing , had cut the shingles on the old roof then tried sliding the metal flashing underneath.. got frustrated when I kept hitting nails. Then I was unsure how to finish at the top.. then it started getting dark.

If I can get someone during the day to do the roof I think it may save me some time since it gets dark so soon after I get home from work
$250 to finish the roof how does that sound? ( labor)

tahnx for the advice!

Price seems okay if it's from someone you trust. Is it a real, licensed, roofer?

Seems fair- roofers I know charge a days labor for that type of job vs the size of the job. Makes sense- by the time they drive there, take ladders off the truck, get set up, etc- it doesn't matter if they are putting on 5 shingles or 3 squares.
