It is an awesome awesome trail sled. So amazingly light...I can pick the front end up with one arm. I love it....buuuuut...next year it'll be going away to be replaced by the 1200 4-stroke. I rode Twin Wackas 1200 last year...the thing is GLUED to the trail...and I gotta admit, having a 4 stroke is very nice.

A friend just picked up a 09 1200 Renegade. Curious to see how it works out for him coming from a 04 REV 800.

I'd love to see AC's new 800 HO dropped in the sno pro chassis for next year. We'll see what they come up with. Hopefully I can splurge and get a new one next year!

The only 82 SRX's that got out were the ones used for testing and magazine articles like mine. The 81 SRX's were a nightmare and Yamaha had a ton of recalls, replaced engines, and unhappy customers. The 82 was all set to go with magazines and brochures out and orders taken. Yamaha pulled the plug at the last minute because they did not want another 81 SRX nightmare out there. They spend the extra year devolping the 83 V-max 540 which was a huge hit in the muscle sled market. Jeff Wurl

How does a snomobile ride compared to a waverunner/seadoo? Similar experience?

Sleds are faster(even a 500 or 600cc will get you over 100 MPH and get to 60 MPH in under 4 secs) and they handle a little differently. Going around corners a sled will want to lift the inside ski. You counter this with body language. On a Sea-doo the hull carves in the direction you lean. Also, you don't have to worry about a pump losing suction and giving you a herky-jerky ride. When I see moguls ahead, I stand up and take them with my knees. Once you get good at this, you can skip the sled across the top of the moguls. IMO there is nothing like driving a sled.

That is badazz.....how tough is it to handle the cold temps at speed?

People down south always ask me how I deal with the cold. The snowmobile gear is so good you actually sweat most of the time instead of being cold. Jeff Wurl

No comparison really. You unleash a well studded 800 on an ice road or hard pack trail and it will try to rip itself out from under you.

Arms stretch, muscles tighten, butterflies fill your belly and a couple of seconds later you are running over 100mph :):):)

Railing thru a tight trail at night at ludicrous speeds is a thrill that can't be matched. I have driven pretty much everything with a motor in it and it just doesn't compare. Real sledders will tell you, you become ONE with the sled and just think it thru the trail. Its an awsome feeling.

Deep powder riding probably feels about the closest to a PWC and even that isn't really close.

As for cold, never feel cold. Gortex shells and high tech underwear keeps you as warm as you would ever want to be.

Gladhe8er
10-20-2009, 09:20 AM
Also, pretty much all new sleds come with heated handlebars and throttles. Some even have heated seats. But like others said, when you are working a sled through the trails, you can sweat even in 20 degree temps.

Big Time
10-20-2009, 09:20 AM
That is badazz.....how tough is it to handle the cold temps at speed?

With the right gear it is not an issue. Most of the sleds these days come with handlebar and thumbs warmers which is really the only place that I get cold. Most people will wear a full face sheild helmet, but I use a moto x style helmet and goggles...just like the feel a little better. It does let some air in on the sides, but nothing that I couldn't handle and I've been in negative degree weather carving the trails at 30-40 mph.:26:

How does he like that F8, I heard the twin spar is a nice riding trail sled?

Loves it. He let my Mom ride it and she wouldnt get off so he went out the next day and bought her an F6! He won't even get on his Edge 800 anymore and my mom won't ride anything but her F6. I like my firecat, but the 'rents don't like it at all. I like the light weight of the firecats...the twin spars are definitely heavier and no fun to play around in the powder, but for the trails, they are excellent.

Hey guys I got a couple sleds I haven't rode in years. Arctic Cat EXT and Prowler. They are sitting on a aluminum Polaris trailer. We don't get snow around here like we used to so I never use them. Here are a couple pics....if anybody wants them make an offer and they're yours. I don't want this to look like a classified ad....just figured somebody could use them. PM me for details if you like.

Not to many running around on the original rings and pistons, unless they have no rings! I know SC288 has an 04 that the engine has not been open. I upgraded mine with coated wiseco pistons with dual rings and also did VF 3 reeds. When I took mine apart the rings were so pitted they looked like a high school boy wit bad acne. My sled had 2000 miles and was down over 20 lbs of compression. I suspect mine let go because of a crack reed boot, or a leaky PTO side crank seal.

The rings in my 04 600 HO SDI let go last year with about 2000 miles on it. The dealer honed the cylinders, replaced the rings and now one side continuously fouls plugs when it sits at idle warming up for a few minutes. It went back to the dealer one time and they gave it the latest computer updates, but it didn't seem to help. Anyone deal with a similar experience?

The wife has the same sled,at the end of the season 2 years ago her sled would stall going in reverse (common problem with 04's---bad rings=low compression) I rebuilt the top end with new piston and rings ----ran well all last season, obviously you running fresh gas and new set of plugs. joe D.

I do believe that the cylinder bores are nikasil coated. You don't just hone them. You should buy new a piston/ring set and sent it to get re-coated. They will hone the cylinder to fit the new piston at the proper clearance. I have had many a doo cylinder done and it is the only way to "Doo" it right.
By the way, that SDI system (next to the new direct injection) is the best two-stroke injection system for a sled.

I lost out tonight...luckily I calmed down and got in the car before I beat the hell out of the guy...

I found a sweet deal on a 03 rev 800 for 2500 motor redone at 3000 and had 6000 on it. Mint according to the pics and the owner was 65-70.

I called the guy at 1:30pm today an figured it was already sold. But this time I got lucky...he had it. I told him I will take the sled sight unseen and when can I come get it, he said 4pm today. I offered money through paypal just incase and he said no its yours. I told him several times to make sure he has my name and number and if anything changes call because I will be driving 1.5 hours. I called on the way and he did not answer, when I got there he came up and said sorry it is sold, a guy followed me home and purchased it. I started to lose it and asked why he did not call and he said he did not think about it.

I would like to know how some of these trash piles get through life without being beat.

If anything is out there please let me know.

Thanks! Todd

Our heavy mod sled would stand up and pull a wheelie on command on water, ran 72 mph in 500'

Where do you pick up the trails out of Lake George ? Is there a trail head in Bolton landing ? What the Lake riding scene like up there ?

I made the mistake of trading sleds with my wife last night. I spent most of today shopping for a thundercat for myself becase I dont think I'l be getting my sled back anytime soon.

We have access to the trails from right behind our house...no trailering!! We pick the trail up right around Ciro's Restaurant in Lake Luzerne.

Normally once the Lake freezes over you can get some real good lake riding in...can make it to Bolton Landing usually. This year sucked for lake riding...lake froze late, late freezing north, and once it did get cold there was not snow on the lake, total bummer. And when we finally got snow last week, the heavy snow actually weighed the ice down and water started coming over the ice. The last weekend of the winter carnival (end of Feb) was pretty much canceled or relocated.

Big Time pretty much summed it up. Bolton Landing does not have a trail system, so most guys trailer a few miles to Lake george village to unload. The lake riding scene is nothing special because all the establishments are located at the southern basisn. The Great Sacandaga is a much better lake to ride if you want to hit a bunch of different places. That lake is a bit tricky too, just like Lake George.

Nope! His ZRT rides MUCH better than my Polaris Ultra. Of course it doesn't hurt that his is an 800 either. Why is it that I found out he got the better sled at the end of the season? :cuss:

Of course it just gives him a good excuse to buy a new sled. Couldn't keep his 800 ZRT and just get me a different one... Noooo....

DG...you need to buy my sled and blow his doors off. Plus, you'd rail through the bumps that will break that ZRT in half...

Picked up a 99 136 T-cat today. We normally have a very short season here of ditch banging and field racing with some occasional bar hopping. Its impossible to justify spending the coin on new a new machine.

Sad thing is, we have more snow here in central OH than what was in the dry fields of Ann Arbor today.

Season died here this week. Put on 250 miles last weekend on near perfect trails and two days later they were officially closed down do to water issues. :( We had six straight days of sunshine and above freezing temps and then the rains came. We are now in day three of near 50 and rain :( :( :(

Shortest season I can remember in decades.

Yeah it was terrible. Had to trailer all year but that made me put on good miles the days that I was out there. 715 for the season(average 900-950)
