View Full Version : Opinion - fastest single engine V - HP for Hp

Winter (and broken Merc outboard again) has me down and I keep thinking about putting together a project.

I want a single engine boat (V-bottom) 24' or greater that would make a good race boat as well.

I'm looking for the fastest hull Hp for Hp.

Yes, my project will be diesel but that has no effect on the question, I need to determine what hull I would start with? It doesn't have to be a boat currently in production, I would start with a used boat that runs great now so I have a baseline to work with.

There are soooo many out there now Activator, Phantom, Fountain, etc, etc which is faster?

Tuff?

Tuff? Is that a brand? (LOL)

I know, I don't even have a thought to start with. The last single we did was a Maelstrom 24' and that 1990 - times have changed.

if you want a fast 24 footer i would think maybee a 27 foot fountain would do it....

It's 24 or greater, if you put a 500hp in a Foutain 27 or Activator or Phantom or Batboat or etc, etc - Which is faster in general?

I know rigging, weight etc, etc but overall which is consistantly faster?

Tuff, just went to the site - WOW looks really sharp. I like that long slender sit way back look - nice.

But what would a Fountain run or Krypto run with the same 525hp? faster than 92 that the Tuff says it runs?

Fountain won't come anywhere near that. 27' with a 525 would probably run 84-86mph. Not sure about Krypto's, they are fast though. What about a 25' or 26' Eliminator Eagle?

That Tuff is really impressive!!!

Hi Mark.

I rode with Mark in his 28ft twin 250 outboard Tuff 28 and we saw the GPS go over 84mph with 4 guys in the boat (not sure how much fuel). That was also only on a quick 5-10 minute ride without really trying for big speed #'s......

The thing was a rocket and felt stable and hooked up at all speeds.

The fit and finish on the Tuff is amazing and I would recommend it highly.

Actually the title of ''fastest single engine Vee bottom with unlimited power..." belongs to Gary Taylor and his Howard 28 at 130.3mph.
We need someone who wishes to challenge that with a TUFF 28.

Tuff- Those numbers are great. Says allot about my hull efficency. I need about 300 hp more to run the same speed in a 24' boat.:sifone:

To race with a single Desiel engine and I could have any hull combination I would go with the 32' Buzzi like Nemschoff ran back in the day. Drop that lump low in the hull, and run the Buzzi Drive...

RumRunner,

Respect what your saying but it would need to be a production boat and we would run an outdrive. I know Buzzi boats well and his drives inside out. Although they are fast they are not practical for what I want to achieve.

So, I am guessing most bets would be Tuff, Activator or Extreme would be the fastest platforms to start with?

I'm partial, but I have had 2 24' Superboats with ourboards and now have a 27' Activator with twi 200's, going 75. Now, my boat is a 24 degree hull with no notch or pad, whereas some of these other boats have pads and may not perform as well at speed in rough water. So, my question would be "do you want the fastest in rough water or in flat water?". I would go with an Activator, 27 or 32 in rough.

velocity 26's are pretty quick, but you gotta be right on top of the wheel when ya get going fast. We had a 26 with 550hp (comparable to the merc 525's which make 560hp)... the speedo only went to 80 and it was burried.
